This week brings new and returning shows with the Houston Symphony, ongoing productions at Ensemble and Catastrophic Theatre, plus a final performance for Rec Room.

Top Performing Arts Openings This Week: July 1 to 7, 2024

  • Houston Symphony presents Star-Spangled Salute at Miller Outdoor Theatre | Thursday, July 4 | FREE – Celebrate our nation’s birthday with this annual favorite, a concert of patriotic music, followed by an epic fireworks show. This family-friendly performance is a summer Houston tradition. 8:30pm.
  • Pullman Porter Blues at Ensemble Theatre | Thursday, July 4 to Sunday, July 7 | Ongoing – In this captivating coming-of-age story woven with Blues music, three generations of Pullman porters work on the luxurious Panama Limited train between Chicago and New Orleans, confronting their own history and what their futures hold. This production runs through Wednesday, July 28. $44 and up. Showtimes vary.
  • Catastrophic Theatre presents Tamarie’s Texas Toast! at MATCH | Friday, July 5 to Sunday, July 7 | Ongoing – It’s not summer without the annual chaos from the mind of Tamarie Cooper. This year’s show finds Cooper and her merry maniacs delivering a production as big as the Lone Star State. Expect references to high school football, gas station beavers, flag parades, giant roaches, tons of guns, the glory of Whataburger and so much more. This production runs through Saturday, August 3. Pay-what-you-can. Showtimes vary.
  • Houston Symphony presents The Legends of Country at Miller Outdoor Theatre | Saturday, July 6 | FREE – The orchestra salutes some of country music’s biggest names in this concert featuring songs by Johnny Cash, Hank Williams, Kenny Rogers, Dolly Parton, Carrie Underwood, Faith Hill, and more. Singers Patrick Thomas and Rachel Potter join the symphony for the performance. 8:30pm.
  • Performing Arts Houston presents Bluey’s Big Play at Wortham Center | Saturday, July 6 & Sunday, July 7 – Based on the Disney Junior series, this family-friendly performance finds Bluey and his friends trying to get his dad to get up off the bean bag on a Sunday afternoon. $35 and up. Showtimes vary.
