  • Broadway Across America presents Funny Girl at Hobby Center | Tuesday to Sunday – With one of the most iconic scores of all time by Jule Styne and Bob Merrill, plus an updated book from Harvey Fierstein based on the original classic by Isobel Lennart, this musical tells the story of the legendary Fanny Brice, who rose from the Lower East Side of New York to stardom. Featuring songs like “Don’t Rain on My Parade” and “People,” it’s a show beloved the world over for decades. $35 and up. Showtimes vary.
  • Stages presents Sister’s Summer School Catechism: God Never Takes a Vacation at the Gordy | Tuesday to Sunday – Denise Fennell-Pasqualone is back as the irrepressible and irascible Sister, in the latest outing of the popular series. This time, she’s teaching a summer school session to a bunch of kids who goofed off in catechism class all year—and she’s not happy about it. Expect audience interaction and lots of laughs. $78 and up. Showtimes vary.
  • TUTS presents Spotlight Series: Dear Evan Hansen at the Ion | Thursday | FREE – The Broadway smash launches its national tour in Houston next month. Learn more about the musical, its themes and impacts in this behind-the-scenes discussion. You’ll learn exciting details about the show, and enjoy performances from the production, meet special guests, and test your knowledge with trivia. Registration required. 6pm.
  • Meiji Dances at Museum of Fine Arts, Houston | Thursday | FREE – Inspired by the exhibition Meiji Modern: Fifty Years of New Japan, the movements in Meiji Dances intertwine traditional Japanese dance forms with contemporary vocabularies and reflect the collision and integration of Western influences. 7pm to 8pm.
  • NobleMotion Dance presents Stalactites at MATCH | Thursday to Saturday – The company’s 16th season begins with this near-immersive experience set in a futuristic primal society. The performance draws inspiration from Plato’s allegory of the cave as a response to current advances in AI technology. The theater is transformed into an industrial cave with climbable architectural structures, and the light grid is lowered into the performance space as the dancers perform above the fixtures. A new hour-long music score haunts and renders beautiful a hollow world full of possibility. $35. Showtimes vary.
  • Performing Arts Houston presents 5th Annual Mariachi Festival at Wortham Center | Friday to Sunday – More than a dozen performers take to the stage across this weekend that celebrates the artistry and culture of mariachi. Audiences can enjoy appearances by some of the best musicians and ballet folklorico dancers from Texas and beyond, including Mariachi Mariposas, Mariachi 7 Leguas, and others from Houston and Mexico. $19 and up. Friday and Saturday 7pm; Sunday 3pm.
  • Apollo Chamber Players presents Mekong Soul at Miller Outdoor Theatre | Saturday | FREE – This performance of music and dance tells three powerful and multi-sensory stories about life on the Mekong River of Southeast Asia. Told with spoken word and moving images, it’s an approachable exploration of multiple artistic styles. 8:00pm.
