Stop in to The Hay Merchant on Westheimer in Montrose for a craft beer – or three – that taste precisely as they were intended.
You won’t find any sloppy keg tapping going on here. The team at the Hay Merchant has gone to great pains to be sure that serve each of the craft beers they offer at precisely the right temperature, with the correct levels of pressure and gas mix.
The bar focuses on local Houston and Texas craft brews, but has offerings from across the U.S. In fact, you’ll find 80 craft beers on tap on any given day, including five cask ales.
Steeped (or is that brewed?) in Houston history, the bar features warm tones with a light industrial, almost steampunk aesthetic.
Reclaimed pavers from Downtown line one wall, while the custom-built taps are made from various reclaimed tools and fixtures. In fact, the bar takes its name from the occupation of Michael Louis Westheimer, German immigrant and namesake of Westheimer Road.
And since The Hay Merchant is a product of the same group that brought Anvil Bar & Refuge and Underbelly, it’s no surprise that the bar’s kitchen offers comfort food a grade above your typical pub fare. In fact, during the bar’s Fatty Hour, every night from 11pm until 1am, you’ll find a full menu of $3 items to cap off your evening. The daily happy hour offers pints from 30 select taps of beer for just $3 each from 3pm to 6:30pm.
