Top 14 Things To Do for Kids & Families in Houston This Month: August 2023

  • Summer Bash at Northgate Shopping Center | Tuesday, August 1 | FREE – Hosted by the Power of Love Church, this event invites families to the Northwest Houston shopping center for giveaways of gift cards, cash prizes, bikes, toys and more—plus free food, snowcones and facepainting. Registration required. Register beginning at 5:30pm; event starts at 6pm.
  • Abilities Expo at NRG Center | Friday, August 4 to Sunday, August 6 | FREE – This free expo aims to connect the public with the latest products, technologies and resources that meet the needs of people of all ages that live with disabilities. Find out how to engage in adaptive sports, dance groups, and many other inclusive activities through demonstrations and informative workshops. Free with registration. Friday and Saturday 11am to 5pm; Sunday 11am to 4pm.
  • Jurassic World Live Tour at NRG Stadium | Friday, August 4 to Sunday, August 6 – Journey to Isla Nubar in this Jurassic World adventure that takes a wild turn in a live arena show. Watch as Blue the Raptor, the mighty T. Rex and more of your favorite dinosaurs come to life in this action-packed production. Before the show, take in photo opportunities with a Triceratops, Stegosaurus, the Jurassic World Jeep, and more in a one-hour pre-show experience. $20 and up. Times vary.
  • 2023 Watermelon Dash at Karbach Brewing Company | Saturday, August 5 – Take part in the 4th annual Watermelon Dash, the third and final Summer Dash Series race, designed to help keep you and the family fit and refreshed in the summer. In addition to 5K and 10K runners, Kids K and Family Walk participants will also receive a t-shirt and finisher’s medal. Stick around for the post-race fun with food and drink, music and more entertainment. $25 for the Kids K; $50 and up for other lengths. 7:30am.
  • Chalk on the Block at Bagby Park | Saturday, August 5 | FREE – Artists return to the sidewalks around Bagby Park in Midtown for live creation of colorful, chalk-based 3D artwork. This month’s theme is outer space. 10am to 2pm.
  • Culture Camp for Teens: Master Chef Showdown at Asia Society Texas Center | Monday, August 7 to Friday, August 11 – Help your kiddo tap into their inner chef with a week-long camp focused on Asian food traditions. Learn how to make smart, healthy food choices while developing leadership skills for inside and outside the kitchen, followed by a judged event at the end. Recommended for ages 13 to 17. Not recommended for students with food allergies or food sensitivities$375, plus $50 materials fee. 9am to 3pm.
  • Taylor Fest at Rise Rooftop | Friday, August 11 – This all-ages dance party will have Swifties singing all the hits of the pop superstar in the airy environment of Rise Rooftop in Midtown. $20. 9pm.
  • Seussical at MATCH | Friday, August 11 to Sunday, August 13 – Oh the places you will go with this lighthearted and fun musical based on Dr. Seuss classics. The colorful characters transport us from the Jungle of Nool to the Circus McGurkus and off to the invisible world of the Whos. $40 and up; $20 for ages 11 and under. Showtimes vary.
  • Moody Gardens Air, Car & Boat Show at Moody Gardens Convention Center | Friday, August 11 to Sunday, August 13 – Hundreds of vehicles built for land, sea and air will assemble for one weekend in Galveston that features aircraft rides, an air show, up-close viewings of all the crafts, live music, and a Saturday night fireworks show. $20 and up. Times vary.
  • AIA Sandcastle Competition at East Beach | Saturday, August 12 & Sunday, August 13 | FREE – Walk the sandy beaches of Galveston as you watch in awe as pros sculpt giant sandcastles and elaborate works of art with themes like pop culture, kids board games, Americana and more. If you happen to miss the big competition day, Sunday offers a viewing day with potentially smaller crowds. Free to attend, though parking is $15 (cash only). Competition begins at 10am; awards at 4:30pm.
  • Houston Astros vs. Seattle Mariners at Minute Maid Park | Friday, August 18 to Sunday, August 20 – Just before heading into the final month of the regular season, the Astros will host division rivals from Seattle in a three-game series in Downtown. See some of your favorite players in action as they look to finish the season strong. $26 and up. Times vary.
  • Preseason: Houston Texans vs. Miami Dolphins at NRG Stadium | Saturday, August 19 – Football season returns and the Texans embark on another year, facing the Dolphins in the team’s only home preseason game. $24 and up. 3pm.
  • Kidz Bop Live at Smart Financial Centre | Friday, August 25 – The music group just for kids brings family-friendly covers of popular hits to the stage in the Sugar Land. Sing along to “As It Was,” “About That Time,” “Anti-Hero,” and more at this just-for-kids concert. $39.50 and up. 7pm.
  • Houston Dash vs. Kansas City Current at Shell Energy Stadium | Saturday, August 26 – With no home matches scheduled in September, this will be your last chance to catch the Dash before their regular season finale in October. They’ll see a struggling Kansas City squad, hoping to score some goals and move up the table before this fall’s playoffs. $10 and up. 7:30pm.
