Glimpse the turmoil of a struggling school in need of saving in Exit Strategy at Rec Room in Downtown, with performances from Wednesday, September 26 through Saturday, October 13, 2018.

Hailed as “riveting,” “sharp,” and “richly metaphoric,” the critically-acclaimed Exit Strategy by Ike Holter opens the 2018-2019 season at Rec Room in Downtown.

Inspired by the 2013 mass closure of 49 public schools, which displaced nearly 12,000 children of mostly minority backgrounds, Exit Strategy is a self-described “comedic thriller” that indicts the way children are educated in big American cities, while showing why the gap between “haves” and “have nots” continues to grow.

Searching for a way out

Set in Chicago, Exit Strategy tells the story of a fictional public high school slated for closure at the end of the year.

Despite funding cuts, bureaucrats run amok, apathy, and a rodent infestation, a small, multiracial group of teachers launch a last-minute effort to save the school by putting their careers, futures, and safety in the hands of a fast-talking administrator who may be in way over his head.

The tenuous situation also raises fears and anxieties among students and within the volcanic neighborhood that surrounds the school.

Featuring a dynamite cast including Susan Koozin (Stages Repertory Theatre), Greg Dean (Catastrophic Theatre), and Gabriel Regojo, Exit Strategy plays to an intimate room of up to 60 audience members each night, displaying Holter’s signature razor-sharp, quick-witted, foul-mouthed, and jaw-dropping prose about a topic plaguing virtually every sprawling urban school district — including our own here in Houston.
