Come alive for Dia de los Muertos across Houston

Celebrate Dia de los Muertos, Latin America’s Day of the Dead at these parties and family festivals throughout Houston on Saturday, November 1, 2014.

• Feast from Oaxaca Lunch Buffet and Tequila Mezcal Tasting at Pico’s Mex-Mex – Dive into a feast featuring the seven moles of Oaxaca and other traditional dishes or simply indulge in a tasting experience of mezcal and tequila. 11am to 3pm.
• Saint Arnold’s Dia de los Muertos Party at El Big Bad – Enjoy an all-day, family friendly Day of the Dead party featuring costumes, face painting, live music by Los Skarnales. A cask of Sain Arnold’s Pumpkinator will on hand, and Santo will be on tap. No cover. 11am to 2am.
• MECA Dia de los Muertos Festival | FREE – Recognizing the differences in Latin celebrations of Dia de los Muertos, the event focuses on the common theme of honoring family and friends. Expect music, dance, theater, food and visual arts from different Latin American countries at MECA’s nationally recognized historic Dow School in the Sixth Ward. 11am to 7pm; continues Sunday 11am to 6pm.
• 27th Annual Dia de los Muertos Family Day Fiesta at Lawndale Art Center | FREE – Enjoy refreshments and children’s activities such as decorating sugar skulls, along with performances by Houston Grand Opera, Mixteco Ballet Folklorico and Secret Admirer Puppets. Noon to 4pm.
• Dia de los Muertos Block Party in the East End | FREE – Find free music, dancing and entertainment on 76th Street near Don Carlos Mexican Restaurant, between Avenue E and Sherman. Noon to 9pm.
• Evenings on the Esplanade presents Day of the Dead Party | FREE – Enjoy delicious food, kids activities, music, dancing and more as the weekly Evenings on the Esplanade at Navigation expands for a Dia de los Muertos celebration. 5pm to 9pm.
• Dia del Los Muerts at Pearl Sports Bar – Paint your face and head over to this recent edition (in a familiar space) to the Washington Avenue bar scene. Music by DJ Kittie Burciaga. No cover. 10pm.
