  • The Houston Writers Guild Authorpalooza Conference at Brazos Bookstore Kickoff | Friday, October 4 | FREE – This celebration of the written word begins with a talk by Deborah D.E.E.P. Mouton, Houston Poet Laureate.  After Mouton’s presentation,  a book launch for the Journey Into Time anthology follows. 7pm.
  • Friends of Houston Public Library Book Sale | Saturday, October 5 | FREE – Headover to 6510 W. Little York Road to shop a variety of hardcover and paperback titles, across multiple genres, including adult and children’s books. Sales benefit library programming. 10am to 2pm.
  • Author Indie Book Fair at the British International School | Saturday, October 12 | FREE  Support independent Texas authors, who will showcase their work, greet fans and sign books in Katy. The family friendly event features a variety of titles and subjects. 10am to 6pm.
  • Niki Herd with Kevin Prufer at Basket Books & Art | Tuesday, October 15 | FREE – Herd reads from her latest poetry collection, The Stuff of Hollywood. She’ll then discuss her work with fellow poet Kevin Prufer. Books by both authors will be available for sale. 6:30pm.
  • Murder By the Book Recommends | Wednesday, October 16 | FREE –  This annual fan favorite event will get you ready for your holiday shopping. The book center staff shares their favorite current and upcoming books for everyone on your list. Refreshments will be served and there are discounts on recommended books. 6:30pm.
  • Gulf Coast Reading at Lawndale | Friday, October 18 | FREE – This monthly reading series spotlights esteemed and emerging writers. Participating student readers are from the University of Houston’s MFA and Ph.D. programs in creative writing. You’ll hear work as diverse as the Gulf Coast itself. 7pm to 9pm.
  • Talia Hibbert at Blue Willow Bookshop | Saturday, October 19 – The author will discuss her work with Chanecka Williams from Kindred Stories. Following the discussion, she will greet fans and pose for photos. In order to attend, guests must purchase one of her novels from the store. Guests may bring up to two titles from home. $13.99 and up. 5pm to 6pm.
  • Elena Karaytcheve presents Funny/Sad at the Rec Room | Saturday, October 19 – This debut work weaves personal essays and short stories into a tapestry of raw emotion, pulling you into a space where reality feels just a little bit stranger, and far more beautiful. A short film introduces the characters prior to the reading in this multimedia literary event. $15. 7pm to 9pm.
  • Inprint Margarett Root Brown Reading Series presents Richard Powers at the Alley Theatre | Monday, October 21 The author will read from his new novel Playground followed by an on-stage conversation with author and National Book Critics Circle finalist Lacy M. Johnson. Playground threads together four lives from across the globe, with their stories converging on the tiny atoll of Makatea in French Polynesia. Books will be for sale at the event and a signing follows the discussion. $5. 7:30pm.
  • The Progressive Forum & Rice University School of Humanities: Douglas Brinkley & Caleb McDaniel in Conversation at Stude Concert Hall | Tuesday, October 22 | FREE with RSVP – The history professors and nationally acclaimed authors and speakers host this discussion about the 2024 election. Sure to be a sell-out event, it will explore important perspectives about voting and issues of importance today. Registration is required to attend. 7pm.
  • Lily Payen at Village Books | Saturday, October 26| FREE – The Woodlands bookshop celebrates the author and blogger’s cookbook, Feeding Tiny Bellies. Named for her wildly popular blog. The cookbook offers more than 100 simple recipes to help other parents and caregivers make meals they can feel confident about serving to their little ones. 3pm to 4:30pm.
