Sunday, August 17[/quote_box_right]Signs of fall are beginning to emerge, including the Houston Texans preseason home opener against the Atlanta Falcons, back-to-school events and the end of the summer concert season. However, weather-wise we’re still in the thick of summer.
Houston Restaurant Weeks continues to please palates and pockets across Houston, the sensational and popular UniverSoul Circus is playing at Butler Stadium and Miller Outdoor Theatre wraps up its Rock Docs series. There’s a whole lot more great stuff to do this weekend in Houston.
Things to Do All Weekend
- UniverSoul Circus | Daily – Celebrate the 20th anniversary of this massively popular touring show featuring mostly human performers from across the globe. It’s a crowd-pleaser for all age. Times and prices vary. You can likely find better or cheaper seats on the ticket resale market.
- Houston Restaurant Weeks | Daily – Experience great meals at fantastic Houston area restaurants while saving money and supporting the Houston Food Bank with Houston Restaurant Weeks.
- Pollywog at Studio 101 | Thursday through Saturday – Experimental, emotional and avant-garde, Pollywog is the first full-length play from emerging playwright Keian McKee. It tells of Polly’s journey into the Atlantic to dispose of her mother’s ashes and revisit her past. $20; discounted $10 tickets available. 8pm nightly.
- Delta H Anime and Gaming Convention in Uptown | Friday through Sunday – Pile in for this celebration of video-gaming, role-playing and anime at JW Marriott Convention Hall across from the Galleria on Westheimer. $35 one-day passes; $90 three-day pass. Discounted admission available for a limited time. Times vary.
- Caribbean Rumfest at Jones Plaza in Downtown | Saturday and Sunday – Celebrate National Rum Day on August 16 with a big outdoor party in Downtown with rum tasting, Caribbean cooking classes and array of live local and international musical acts. $45; $30 in advance.
- Repticon Houston at Pasadena Convention Center | Saturday and Sunday – Find reptiles, amphibians and countless pet products for both at this massive trade show for reptile fanatics. $10 one-day, $15 two-day ages 13 and up; $5 for ages 5 to 12. Kids 4 and under are free. Saturday 10am to 5pm; Sunday 10am to 4pm
- Full Gallop at Stages Repertory Theatre | Daily – See Houston actress Sally Edmundson take on former Vogue editor Diana Vreeland in this hilarious one-woman show. Discounted tickets available. Discounted tickets available. Times vary.

- Rise of the Independence at Space Center Houston | FREE – See a full-sized replica of the Space Shuttle Independence as it’s lifted to its permanent home atop Space Center Houston’s historic space shuttle carrier aircraft. 8am sharp, weather permitting.
- Houston Texans’ Open Practice with the Atlanta Falcons – Enjoy the final day of the Texan’s open Training Camp at this special open practice with this weekend’s visiting Falcons. Free tickets are all gone, but you can still snag tickets for about $20 on the ticket resale market. 8am to 10:30pm.
- DogVacay Yappy Hour at the Boneyard Drinkery | FREE to attend – Bring your favorite (spayed or neutered) pups to the Boneyard on Washington for a doggie happy hour. DogVacay will buy you a drink if you’re one of the first 50 people to arrive. Enjoy a photo booth from Stash Designs, puppy ice cream from Natural Paws and more. 6pm to 10pm.
- Prohibition Test Kitchen at Kraftsmen Baking – Join Ben MacPherson and Matt Wommack for a nostalgic and decadent celebration, and be the first group to sample the soon-to-reopen Prohibition Supperclub and Bar’s brand new menu. Proceeds go to benefit Recipe for Success. $75. 7pm to 10pm.
- America’s Test Kitchen: Live at Jones Hall – Join host Christopher Kimball as he brings this stage version of the popular PBS cooking show to Downtown Houston. $38 to $48; Discounted $20.50 tickets are available for a limited time. 8pm
- Queensrÿche in Concert at Arena Theatre – The heavy metal hitters from the 80s bring their progressive hard rock to H-Town. Helstar opens. Discounted $13.75 tickets are available for a limited time. 8pm.
- Red Bull Curates: The Canvas Cooler Project at Winter Street Studios | FREE – Twenty of Houston’s leading graphic artists––including Sebastien “Mr. D” Boileau, Taft McWhorter, GONZO247 and Anat Ronen––compete and turn their eye-catching designs into canvas-wrapped Red Bull coolers. - Rock Docs: Stop Making Sense Movie Screening at Miller Outdoor Theatre | FREE – See Jonathan Demme’s landmark 1984 documentary film that chronicles David Byrne’s Talking Heads during their Speaking inTongues tour. 8:30pm.

- Ken Gaines in Concert at GreenStreet | FREE – Award-winning Texas singer-songwriter performs on the new Lawn at Downtown Houston’s GreenStreet. 5pm to 8pm.
- Zoovie Night: The Sequel at Houston Zoo Cool Nights – Cover band Beetle plays the hits of the Fab Four, kids can participate in a Lady Bug Release, visit the Bug House and more. Stay for an outdoor screening of the classic film Back to the Future from 1985 (or is that 1955?) at 9pm. Activities 5pm to 8:30pm.
- Cull by Monica Vidal Art Opening at University Museum at Texas Southern University | FREE– See Vidal’s newest largest scale installation/sculpture, along with her works Temple Hive and Falling Hive and sculptural maquettes and works on paper. 6pm to 9pm.
- Under the Influence of Music Tour featuring Wiz Khalifa in The Woodlands – The Wiz leads an array of hip hop talent, including Jeezy, Tyga, Ty Dolla Sign, Sage the Gemini, Rich Homie Guan, Mack Wilds, IamSu and DJ Drama. - An Evening with Lowrider Band at Miller Outdoor Theatre | FREE– Catch a live performance of this classic rock musicians, responsible for hits like “Slippin’ into Darkness,” “Low Rider,” “9 to 5 (Ordinary Man),” “All Day Music” and “”Why Can’t We Be Friends?” 8:30pm.
