Kick off the 2016-2017 performing arts season at Theater District Open House

Explore the performance venues that make up Houston’s Theater District during the annual Theater District Open House on Sunday, August 28, 2016.

Now in its 23rd year, the TransCanada Theater District Open House is an annual festival that gives arts-lovers a glimpse of the upcoming performing arts season. What do you have to look forward to? A free day of behind-the-scenes experiences and performance previews, as well as special ticket offers.

All ages are invited to attend the festival and learn about the performing arts organizations that call the Theater District home. The kiddos will enjoy an instrument petting zoo held by the Houston Symphony, mini ballet classes for beginners, face painting and stage demonstrations.

Arts organizations participating in Theater District Open House include: Alley Theatre, Broadway at the Hobby Center, Da Camera of Houston, Houston Ballet, Houston Grand Opera, Houston Symphony, Society for the Performing Arts, Theatre Under The Stars and Uniquely Houston.

Outdoor Events

Stroll between the walkable venues or opt for a trolley ride and enjoy pop-up performances along the way. Check out the Theater District from the water by taking a complimentary boat ride from Fish Plaza to the Wortham Theater Center courtesy of Buffalo Bayou Partnership. Food trucks will be stationed around the district for guests to refuel.

Indoor Events

Get a sneak peek into the upcoming season by attending a Q&A session with a performer, going on a backstage tour and seeing a performance. There will be tango and salsa lessons, as well as a mini workshop for area educators. Stick around for a concert from the Houston Symphony at Jones Hall or an onstage class and rehearsal by the Houston Ballet in the Cullen Theater – both taking place at 4pm.
