Top Performing Arts Openings This Week: October 30 to November 5, 2023

• Halloween Candlelit Concert at Post Houston | Halloween, Tuesday, October 31 | FREE – Monarch Chamber Players brings classical music to the Skylawn at Post, ushering in Halloween with a free concert open to the public of all ages. Standing room is free; reserved seating is limited and costs $15. 8pm.
• Performing Arts Houston presents Vienna Boys Choir at Wortham Center | Wednesday, November 1 – The world-renowned choir returns to Houston for a concert showcasing why the ensemble has captivated audiences for more than five centuries. Expect a performance including everything from medieval songs to contemporary compositions. $29 and up. 7:30pm.
• Candlelight Open Air: Día de los Muertos Mariachi Concert at Houston Arboretum | Thursday, November 2 – Adelaide Pilar Band heads to the nature center at Memorial Park for an evening mariachi concert by candlelight that features traditional Mexican folk songs, songs by Juan Gabriel and Julieta Venegas, and more. $55 and up. 6:30pm and 8:45pm.
• Ars Lyrica presents Ecstatic Visions at Hobby Center | Friday, November 3 – The Grammy Award–nominated early music ensemble presents a concert with Handel’s Silete venti as its centerpiece. The spectacular solo motet for soprano and Baroque orchestra rivals the composer’s best operatic scenes. Music by Ciprano da Rore, Johann Schmeltzer, and Jean-Philippe Rameau is also part of the program. $15 and up. 7:30pm.
• Return Engagements at Theatre Southwest | Friday, November 3 | Ongoing – This Canadian farce traces the romantic entanglements of four couples across 30 years. Written by the author of Same Time Next Year, the play was called “amusing and witty” by the Cape Cod Times. $22. Showtimes vary. 
• Shepherd School Opera presents Eugene Onegin at Morrison Theater | Friday, November 3 & Sunday, November 4 – Students in Rice University’s opera program perform this Tchaikovsky treasure, a story of love and loss. $15 and up. Friday 7:30pm; Sunday 32:30pm.
• ROCO presents Unchambered: Rachel Jordan at the Historic Eldorado Ballroom | Saturday, November 4 – The acclaimed violinist offers a vibrant, intimate program honoring the memory and legacy of her father, New Orleans–based musician Kidd Jordan, an internationally acclaimed saxophonist who once played at the Ballroom in the 1970s. Pay-what-you-wish; suggested price of $45. 5pm.
• Dreamscape at Hobby Center | Saturday, November 4 – This benefit performance features dance artists and choreographers from around Texas, who present a program that showcases different dance styles and approaches to the art form. $24 and up. 7:30pm.
• Foundation for Modern Music presents On the Edge at MATCH | Saturday, November 4– This ambitious program features a number of selections, including Mario Lavista’s “Marsias” for solo oboe and crystal glasses, Edgard Varèse’s “Density 21.5” for solo flute, and Kurt Weill’s “Seven Deadly Sins.” Audiences will be asked to cast their vote for their favorite selection. $30. 7:30pm. 

Final Performances This Week

Houston Grand Opera’s stunning Intelligence closes out on Friday, November 3; MATCH will see the final performances of The Birds by Dirt Dogs Theatre on Saturday, November 4; plus, that’s the final day to catch the recently extended Heroes of the Fourth Turning at Rec Room Arts.
