In our Must Do Things Around Greater Houston series, we take a look at Houston’s vast array of communities, neighborhoods and destinations to bring you five fun, tasty, surprising and enticing reasons you should give each one a visit.

Around the Northwest corridor of the 610 loop, you’ll find the largely residential neighborhoods of Lazybrook and Timbergrove near the Heights.

Originally settled by German farmers in the late 1800s, the neighborhoods were founded in the 1950s and ’60s, and today are home to a number of delicious restaurants, bars and laidback hangouts.

Here are our picks for 5 can’t miss things to do in the Lazybrook and Timbergrove neighborhoods:

Note: For the purposes of this list, the Lazybrook/Timbergrove area is defined by this map.

Pair Viet eats with craft brews at Hughie’s

In case you haven’t heard, Houston is one of the most diverse cities in the country, and this quadrant of the city is no different.

Just head over to Hughie’s Tavern and Vietnamese Grill and you’ll see, as you pair vermicelli bowls, shaking beef, colossal chicken wings and filet mignon burgers with local and favorite craft taps.

Don’t forget the Vietnamese coffee tiramisu for dessert.

Spend a day at the park or on the trail

With the White Oak Bayou trickling through the hood, greenspace is abundant in this part of town.

Runners, walkers, and cyclists can hit the West White Oak Bayou Greenway Trail, which runs right through the neighborhoods along T.C. Jester.

The West 11th Street Park boasts over 1,800 mature trees, budding wooded trails, over 100 species of birds, 33 species of butterflies, and countless other wildlife.

And Jaycee Park is a place to relax and play, with a 1/3-mile walking trail, picnic tables and benches, tennis and basketball courts, a playground, and a water playground for the kids.

Eat, shop & play at Railway Heights

The fresh-faced and modern Railway Heights Market combines a food and local vendor hall, big open lawn, in-house bars, impressive art wall from local and emerging artists, and pop-ups from cultural night markets to family-friendly holiday bashes.

Inside the market, fan favorite food stalls include Drunken Pho (Vietnamese noodle soup, banh mi, and more), Peaky Grinders (perfectly greasy burgers and fries), and Mykuna (Latin Asian cuisine from lomo saltado to pork belly bao) from celebrated chef David Guerrero, among many others.

Plus, you can shop for local art, candles, plants, shades, and more. After, grab some ice cream or a local craft beer and hangout in a swing seat in the sprawling front yard.

It’s just where you want to go to unwind with cocktails like the serrano tequila kissed Cactus Juice or happy hour priced glass of vino while you linger over charcuterie and cheeses and a few artisan pizza pies.

Or, the kind of place you want to simply smash a delicious smash burger alongside a local pint. There’s also weekend brunch, featuring mimosa crafts, sangria, and on-point bloodys.
