• Galveston Island Shrimp Festival at Saengerfest Park | Friday & Saturday – Fill up on gumbo, shrimp and Gulf Coast eats at this annual festival that kicks off with a Friday night party, followed by a Saturday morning 5K, cook-off competition, a rum punch contest, vendors along the Strand, and more. Prices for events vary, but Saturday’s popular Gumbo Stroll tasting event starts at $13 in advance; $16 day of. Times vary.
• Karbachtoberfest 2022 Kick-Off at Karbach Brewing Company | Friday & Saturday | No Cover – Running three full weekends (from Friday to Sunday), Karbachtoberfest is back with live music, stein hoisting competitions, wiener dog races and the brewery’s Bavarian-style marzen (lager), Karbachtoberfest. Times vary.
• Comedian Katie Hannigan at Rudyard’s Pub | Friday & Saturday – Co-host of the Lady Journey podcast with fellow comic Sarah Tollemache, the comedian and actor comes to Montrose for back-to-back nights of hilarity. $17 and up. Times vary.
• World Premiere: or/and at Asia Society Texas Center | Friday & Saturday – On two nights this weekend, Asia Society Texas hosts performances of this multimedia chamber operatic poem centered on composer Shih-Hui Chen exploring the contradictions of her immigrant identity. A panel discussion will follow each performance. $35. 7:30pm.
• 86th Annual Fort Bend County Fair & Rodeo in Rosenberg | Friday to Sunday – Through the first Sunday in October, this 10-day fair and rodeo features carnival rides, BBQ competitions, concerts, a farmer’s market, a crawfish boil, a fishing tournament, and much more. Season passes are available for $40; single day admission is $15 at the gate; $5 for ages 6 to 11; free for ages 5 and under. Times vary.
• Houston Symphony presents Joshua Bell & Shostakovich 5 at Jones Hall | Friday to Sunday – New Houston Symphony Music Director Juraj Valčuha leads the orchestra in a performance of Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 5, with Joshua Bell performing Sibelius’s Violin Concerto. $29 and up. Times vary.
• Texas Roots Festival at Texas Roots Ranch | Saturday & Sunday – In New Waverly, this 2-day fest offers live music, food trucks, a beer garden, overnight camping, a local vendor market and more on Texas Roots Ranch, north of Houston. $26 and up. Noon to 10pm.
• Manhattan Short Film Festival at Museum of Fine Arts, Houston | Saturday & Sunday – This popular film gathering returns for two weekends, offering moviegoers a chance to view and vote on the finalists of the Manhattan Short Film Festival, also taking place at theaters around the globe. $10. • On the Verge Theatre presents Tied at Ensemble Theatre | Friday to Sunday | Opening Weekend – When four little girls were killed in the 1963 bombing at a Birmingham Baptist church, the world mourned. But the attack was personal for David, who lost his youngest daughter. And now, someone is threatening the life of his wife and surviving child. • Lend Me A Soprano at Alley Theatre | Daily | Ongoing – In this world premiere by Ken Ludwig, the manager of the Cleveland Grand Opera Company is ready to welcome a preeminent soprano to town for a single show of Carmen. The soprano turns up late, her husband is jealous, and it falls to the manager’s assistant to figure out how the show can go on. Ludwig based the show on his own smash hit Lend Me A Tenor. $26 and up. Showtimes vary.
• Trouble in Mind at Main Street Theater | Daily | Ongoing – The Rice Village theater opens the 2022-23 season with this regional premiere, the story of a gifted Black actress on the cusp of having all she’s dreamed of—but what principles will she have to sacrifice to get it? $44 and up. • Stages presents Dream: The Music of the Everly Brothers at the Gordy | Daily | Final Weekend – With their tight harmonies and songs that unmistakably captured the innocence of young love, the Everly Brothers left an enduring legacy on music, which DREAM explores through their story and 25 of their songs. $30 and up. • Camilo in Concert at Smart Financial Centre – Sugar Land welcomes the five-time Latin Grammy Award–winning singer-songwriter Camilo to the stage. $50.99 and up. 8pm.
