With Pride month in June and Houston’s own 44th annual Houston LGBTQ+ Pride Celebration taking place on Saturday, June 25, we’re celebrating by shouting out some of Houston’s favorite LGBTQ+ establishments that make a choice locale for Sunday Funday.
From drag brunches and bar hopping in Houston’s unofficial “gayborhood,” here’s how to have a prideful Sunday Funday in Houston.
How to Celebrate Sunday Funday in Houston: Pride Edition
Dance, brunch & get rowdy at Boheme’s Drag Brunch
Every Sunday, Boheme puts on a fierce drag brunch, and it is the absolute ultimate hangover cure. Show times are at 11:30am and 2:30pm, and there is a $35 per person cover charge which includes access to the excellent Sunday brunch buffet—filled with tasty things like Filipino biscuits and gravy, goat cheese and mushroom scrambles, smoked bacon, braised barbacoa, fresh fruit, and churros. Tack on Boheme Bloody Marys and have yourself a damn good time with the Queens.
Bar hop in the Fairview District, Houston’s “gayborhood”
Head to the funky mini district around Taft and Fairview, known for its long-standing concentration of all-are-welcome gay bars. There, you’ll find remodeled patio spot Barcode, daylife and nightlife favorite Buddy’s, lively Sunday Funday spot Crocker Bar, Sunday spotlight performances at Eagle, laidback patio bar and darts hangout George’s Country Sports Bar, iconic leather bar Ripcord, and New Orleans-style patio and courtyard bar JR’s Bar and Grill, home to what many consider the the greatest Sunday Funday in all of Houston.
Join the ladies at Pearl Bar
Houston’s finest lesbian bar sits over on Washington Avenue, drawing a crowd of Kings and Queens ready to party. On Sundays, the bar keeps the weekend going with DJ takeovers, pop-up markets, flowing drinks, and more.
Go boot-scootin’ at Neon Boots Dancehall & Saloon
On Sundays, this restored dancehall and saloon offers Country & Western Dancing on its massive dance floor. Hit it to cut-a-rug anytime, but if you’re looking for lessons, you can get ‘em for $10 every second Sunday. And if nightclub style dancing is more your thing, legendary gay bar Rich’s—aka the “Studio 54 of the South”—is exactly where you want to be. Get directions to Rich’s.
Sing your heart out at Karaoke
Sunday Funday wouldn’t be the same without karaoke, as many local queer bars know well. Some favorite Sunday karaoke hangouts include Barcode, with late night sing-a-longs from 11pm to 1:30am; JR’s Bar and Grill, rocking karaoke from 6pm to 2am; Galveston’s Rumors Bar, with karaoke starting at 7pm; and Spring’s The Room Bar, with karaoke every Sunday night. Of course, you can also head to iconic Houston piano bar Michael’s Outpost to sit by the keys for Sheet Music Sundays.
