Support Black-owned businesses and tour one of Houston’s most significant Black history sites at the weekly Freedmen’s Town Farmers Market and monthly bike tour on Saturday, February 27, 2021.
Held every Saturday morning, the Freedmen’s Town Farmers Market gathers a lineup of local vendors that offer fresh produce, healthy foods and drinks, handmade jewelry, candles and more from Black-owned small businesses and entrepreneurs.
The Fourth Ward neighborhood where the Farmers Market takes place is steeped in some of the earliest traces of Black community found in Houston, from the 19th century churches helmed by Pastor Jack Yates (a freedman himself) to the streets of brick, laid by formerly enslaved people as they sought to build their own community more than 150 years ago.
On the fourth Saturday of the month, The Way Fellowship leads bike tours of this historic neighborhood, bringing riders to several of the significant structures and remarkable sites throughout Freedmen’s Town in Fourth Ward. The leisurely bike ride takes place following the Farmers Market, with post-tour stops at Black-owned restaurants and businesses.
