In our Where to Brunch series, we search Greater Houston’s vast array of neighborhoods and communities for the very best brunch offerings. Originally published in 2017, we are now refreshing, updating, and adding to this series, including new neighborhoods and destinations.
Dating back to the 1890s, the bright and vibrant neighborhood of The Heights is filled with historic architecture, thrifts and mom and pop shops, and of course, a mosaic of excellent spots at which to brunch. Check out the best of the best.
Note: For the purposes of this list, the Heights is bound by Katy Freeway to the south, I-610 to the north, I-45 to the east, and Shepherd to the west.
Where to Brunch in The Heights
- Down House – Sip eye-opening morning cocktails like the Big Ol’ Bloody Mary, a bigger, badder, boozier concoction with a chicken wing adornment and a beer back; or a Vietnamese Cocktail Cocktail, a blend of aged rum, sweetened condensed milk and cold-brew. The boozy sips will help wash down bigger, badder brunch plates, from spicy smoked pork hash and chicken & waffles to a kimchi burger. - Revival Market – Hanger steak & yard eggs, buttermilk biscuits & gravy, and house-smoked salmon bagels are just some of the awesome things you can get at this fan-favorite café. But the best part? You can get them all day long. Top notch coffee—in the form of 20-hour cold brews, horchata lattes, impressive cortados, and a selection of house pastries and sweets round out the affair quite nicely. - Better Luck Tomorrow – This powerhouse cocktail bar and kitchen hosts a weekend brunch that you won’t want to wait ’til tomorrow for. Get hangover hashbrowns loaded with gravy, cheese and pickles, custard french toast with angostura crème fraîche, and a don’t-knock-it-til-you-try-it spaghetti sandwich. - Liberty Kitchen & Oyster Bar – If you think every good brunch should involve slurping oysters, LK is the spot for you. Get ‘em on-the-half-shell by the dozen and half-dozen; or go for the wood-grilled numbers, sold in trios and topped with things like bacon jam and jalapeños or garlic butter. The lineup of a.m. specialties is spot on—think chicken-fried steak and eggs, short stacks and omelets stuffed with short rib, bacon and oysters (obviously); and there’s bubbly, brunch cocktails, beer, and wine, too. - Harold’s Restaurant, Bar & Terrace – On nice days, there’s no better spot to brunch than Harold’s rooftop terrace overlooking the bustling 19th Street. Hit it with friends and dig into fried shrimp étouffée rice balls, New Orleans-style beignets and the “Big Nasty Biscuit,” a biscuit sittin’ pretty with buttermilk fried chicken and cheddar sausage gravy. Afterward, dive into nap-required, Southern and Creole-inspired plates like housemade cracklin’ and grits, old-style French toast, and 44 Farm double cheeseburgers stacked with cheese, bacon jam, caramelized onions, all the fixin’s.
