This week in Houston, TX you can dress like your favorite intergalactic character during the Star Wars Art Festival, eat your way through 20 food trucks, get outside and cheer on teams as they race dragon boats along Buffalo Bayou, support a local AIDS service organization by Dining Out for Life, or put on your boots for a show from country music superstars Lady Antebellum, Sam Hunt, and Hunter Hayes.

  • Learn to Taste Like a Sommelier at Spec’s Downtown | Monday, April 27 | FREE – Take notes from Master Sommelier Michael Jordan during this class at the downtown Spec’s superstore. You’ll sample a variety of wines including Carmel Road Pinot Noir, Kendall Jackson Chardonnay, and Tenuta di Arceno while getting tips from Jordan.   • S.I.P. Series in Glenbrook Valley | Wednesday, April 29 – Enjoy cocktails and hors d’ oeuvres at a 1964 Mid-century Modern home in Glenbrook Valley. The See Irreplaceable Places series is presented by The Heritage Society and features a different historic location each month. $75 per person; reservations required and can be made by clicking here. 6pm to 8pm.
  • Dining Out For Life at Various Restaurants Around Houston | Thursday, April 30 – The annual fundraising event takes place around the country and benefits local AIDS service organizations in each participating community. Dining Out for Life in Houston supports AFH, which provides housing, prevention education, HIV testing and youth services to Houstonians. More than 40 restaurants – and counting – will take place in the city-wide fundraiser this year, donating 25% of their proceeds on Thursday, April 30 to AFH.
  • Elton John in Concert at The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavillion | Friday, May 1 Grammy, Academy and Tony Award-winning singer songwriter Elton John will take the stage at the Pavillion in The Woodlands to perform some of his biggest hits. First run tickets are sold out, but you may find cheaper or better seats on the TicketNetwork or Ticket Monster resale sites. 8pm.
  • Houston Dragon Boat Festival Along Buffalo Bayou | Saturday, May 2 | FREE to Attend – Roll out a blanket along the bank to cheer teams on during the annual dragon boat race and festival along Buffalo Bayou. Enjoy the outdoors while taking in cultural performances, dances, live music and tons of food and libations. Races will take place every 15 to 20 minutes. 8:30am to 4:30pm.
  • Independent Bookstore Day at Brazos Bookstore | Saturday, May 2 | FREE to Attend – Celebrate Independent Bookstore Day at Brazos Bookstore with storytime, crafts, scribbling in Hemingwasted coloring books and refreshments from Beviamo and Saint Arnold. Stick around for a literary showdown where four authors will write a story on the spot, read it to a panel of judges, and a winner will be chosen. 10am to 8pm.
  • Derby Day at Julep | Saturday, May 2 | FREE to Attend – Watch the derby at Julep where they’re pulling out all the stops with cocktail service, julep carts, food, live music from Vinyl Ranch and of course, tvs showing the horse races. All races will be shown on the patio with the main event taking place at 5:24pm. Derby attire strongly encouraged. Noon to 10pm.
  • Houston Food Truck Fest at Stereo Live | Saturday, May 2 – Eat your way through 20 of Houston’s favorite food trucks including Happy Endings, Maine-ly Sandwiches, and Wokker Texas Ranger during the Houston Food Truck Fest at Stereo Live. The event will also feature live DJs, a bounce house, karaoke, and drink specials. $18; $5 children 6 to 12; free for children 5 and under. Noon to 5pm.
  • Star Wars Art Festival at Summer Street Studios | Saturday, May 2 and Sunday, May 3 – May the force be with you as you browse a selection of Star Wars-themed artwork by artists near and far, far away curated by Dandee Warhol. Check out items from a variety of vendors, listen to beats from DJs, snap a pic in the photo booth, enjoy complimentary beverages, and nom on delicious food from local food trucks. Costumes encouraged. $5.25 two day entry; free for kids under 12. Noon to 6pm both days.
  • Lady Antebellum, Sam Hunt and Hunter Hayes in Concert at The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavillion | Sunday, May 3 – Country music stars Lady Antebellum, Sam Hunt and Hunter Hayes will perform in The Woodlands during their Wheels Up 2015 Tour. The tour – which started with shows in Europe and Australia – is now stateside with the first three stops in the great state of Texas. Tickets start at $32 including ticket fees, but you may find cheaper or better seats on the TicketNetwork or Ticket Monster resale sites. 7pm.
