This week sees opening performances for ongoing shows from Alley Theatre and Ensemble Theatre, as well as classical concerts on stages across town.

Top Performing Arts Openings This Week: March 18 to 24, 2024

  • Chamber Music Houston presents Fauré Piano Quartet at Stude Concert Hall | Tuesday, March 19 – The worldwide phenomenon returns to the Chamber Music Houston stage in a program featuring Schubert’s Adagio & Rondo Concertante in F major D.487; Dvořák’s Piano Quartet No. 2 in E-flat B.162; and Enescu’s Piano Quartet No. 1 in D Major op. 16. $20 and up. 7:30pm.
  • Patti LuPone: A Life in Notes at Hobby Center | Thursday, March 21 – The Broadway legend and three-time Tony Award winner performs a selection of songs from her storied career along with melodies that are touchstones across her life. $44 and up. 7:30pm.
  • DaCamera presents Danil Trifonov at Wortham Center | Friday, March 22 – Experience the artistry of the pianist the Times of London called “Without question, the most astounding pianist of our age.” The program features Rameau’s Suite in A Minor, RCT 5; Mozart’s Sonata No. 12 in F Major, K. 332; Mendelssohn’s Serious Variations in D Minor, Op. 54, MWV U; and Beethoven’s Sonata No. 29 in B-flat Major, Op. 106, “Hammerklavier.” $46 and up. 8pm.
  • The World is Not Silent at Alley Theatre | Friday, March 22 | Ongoing – This world premiere is the story of a son and his father, trying to reconstruct their strained relationship following the father’s hearing loss. Exploring language and love, it looks at what connects and divides us. This production runs through Sunday, April 14. $42 and up. Showtimes vary.
  • Beatbox: A Raparetta at Ensemble Theatre | Friday, March 22 | Ongoing – This play, soaked in hip-hop culture, explores the lives of two stepbrothers as they navigate through loss, jealousy, friendship and dreams. It’s written and performed in rhythm and rhyme with vocal drumbeats (also known as beatboxing). This production runs through Sunday, April 14. $34 and up. Showtimes vary.
  • Shepherd School Symphony Orchestra: Musical Stories Family Concert at Stude Concert Hall | Saturday, March 23 | FREE – This family-friendly performance is an excellent way to introduce newcomers of all ages to classical music, as well as offering devotees a great concert, featuring selections from Rimsky-Korsakov’s Scheherazade. Meet the instruments and Shepherd School student musicians in the foyer before the concert. 11am.
  • Mercury presents Dvorák’s America at Wortham Center | Saturday, March 23 – The composer’s iconic String Quartet in F Major, Op. 96 “America” headlines this concert, which also includes Anna Clyne’s “Within Her Arms,” Missy Mazzoli’s “Dark with Excessive Bright” and Frank Proto’s Sonata 1963 (arr. Bibeau). $25 and up. 8pm.
  • Music in Context presents Original Romantics at Rice University’s Duncan Recital Hall | Sunday, March 24 – This concert includes Robert Schumann’s First Trio and Johannes Brahms’ Second Quartet, both treasured icons of chamber music, and played on the ensemble’s Viennese Bösendorfer piano of 1852 and original string instruments. Also included are piano gems by the gifted Elizabeth von Herzogenberg. $35. 4pm.

Catch the last shows for Dirt Dogs Theatre’s The Pillowman at MATCH, and 4th Wall Theatre’s The Thanksgiving Play at Spring Street Studios—both of which close on Saturday, March 23.
