Witness the heartwarming, two-person musical that tells a “rags-to-riches” love story of a bright young woman and her mysterious benefactor at Main Street Theater in Rice Village, on stage now through Sunday, June 17, 2018.
Based on Jean Webster’s beloved novel of the same name, Daddy Long Legs presents the story of Jerusha Abbott—the “Oldest orphan in the John Grier Home.”
Everything changes when a mysterious benefactor decides to send her to college to be educated as a writer. One caveat; she is required to write her patron a letter once a month, even as he remains completely anonymous. So she crafts an identify for her imagined kindly old benefactor and dubs him “Daddy Long Legs.”
Increasingly grateful to this kindly gentleman, she continues to blossom at school. Jerusha meets the “youngish” uncle of one of her roommates, Jervis Pendleton, who introduces her to a world of literature, travel, and adventure.
Through her correspondence with Daddy Long Legs and her growing intimacy with Jervis, Jerusha’s letters chronicle her emergence as a delightfully independent “New American Woman.”
Yet, there is one startling fact that Jerusha has yet to uncover – a fact that will change her life forever.
Main Street Theater’s production of Daddy Long Legs is directed by Andrew Ruthven, with musical direction by Debbie Wylie. It stars Matt Harris Andersen as Jervis Pendleton and Shanae’a Moore as Jerusha Abbott. Understudies are Jonathan Teverbaugh and Annie Wild. The show features music and lyrics by the Tony Award-nominated composer/lyricist, Paul Gordon (Jane Eyre), and Tony-winning librettist/director, John Caird (Les Misérables).
