- Midtown Live! at the MATCH | Through Friday, September 2 – Some of Houston’s most loved vocalists take to the stage for a night of electric entertainment, presented by Pitch Me This Productions. Joining them are members of PMT’s Juxtapose Arts Collective, adding dance to this revue for the first time. Tickets range between $10 to $25, not including ticket fees. 8pm.
- Hand to God at the Alley | Through Sunday, September 18 – Fans of irreverent humor and Avenue Q will love this crazy romp about Tyrone, a seemingly innocent sock-puppet who takes possession of a church youth group participant’s arm. The New Yorker called it “Sesame Street meets The Exorcist.” Nuff said. Tickets range between $26 to $45, not including ticket fees. - The Revolutionists at Main Street Theater | Saturday, September 3 to Sunday, October 2 – Lauren Gunderson’s wildly funny, deeply human look at the collision of the lives of four women during France’s Reign of Terror will have you pondering what it means to be connected to someone – or something. Tickets range between $15 to $39, not including ticket fees. Fridays and Saturdays 7:30pm; Sundays 3pm.
- The Burnin’ at the MATCH | Friday, September 9 to Monday, September 19 – Inspired by actual events, this riveting a cappella musical tells parallel stories about race in America, the meaning of community, and how history often repeats itself. - True West at Studio 101 | Friday, September 9 to Friday, September 30 – 4th Wall Theatre Company (formerly Stark Naked Theatre Company) presents this Sam Shepherd classic that delves into sibling rivalry and what it means to be a man. The interactions of two very different brothers and their mutual resentment offers a dark, comic look at being human. Tickets range between $29 to $49, not including ticket fees. Thursdays to Saturdays 7:30pm; Sundays 3pm.
- The Motherf*#ker with the Hat at Obsidian Theater | Thursday, September 15 to Saturday, October 8 – Verbal sparring, love, and loss are the engines that fuel this profane, hilarious play by Adly Guirgis. Along the way to resolution, you’ll pass through addiction, pain, and anger. Good times. Tickets are $30 for reserved seating; $15 for students. Thursdays to Saturdays 8pm.
- 2nd Annual Black Heritage Music and Arts Festival at Discovery Green | Saturday, September 17 – Cultural exhibits, entertainment, and food abound at this family-friendly event that showcases African-American talent and experiences. Tickets are $25; $10 for children aged 9 to 17; $30 at the gate. 4pm to 10pm.
- Miró Strong Quartet at Rice University’s Stude Concert Hall | Tuesday, September 20 – An evening of explosive energy and passion show how alive and exceptional classical music can be in the hands of this globally loved quartet. Tickets range between $25 to $80, not including ticket fees. 7:30pm.
- MET Dance’s 21st Season Opener at Discovery Green | Friday, September 23 | FREE – Houston dancers share the stage with performers from New York in this beloved hometown company’s 2016 – 2017 season opening recital.
