Celebrate the closing of a Houston legend – and River Oaks curiosity – as Blanco’s Bar and Grill closes its doors after three decades during their Farewell Party Weekend on Friday, November 29 and Saturday, November 30, 2013.
Blanco’s is actually arguably the final old Houston honky tonk inside the Loop or even close to it. For the last 31 years, the bar has been serving up drinks and country dancing in the middle of River Oaks. But they’re closing up shop and this weekend is their last hurrah.
As the adjacent private St. John’s School (and Blanco’s landlord) prepares to expand its campus, the bar was given notice that it had to close. But its German-born Texas cowgirl proprietor Karin Barnes has promised that Blanco’s will go out with a band.
Friday night, the popular local band Kenefick, which got its start at Blanco’s, will play from 9pm to 1am. On Saturday, the party continues with a slew of live bands, silent auctions and a potluck dinner.
Saturday’s lineup includes Miss Leslie, John Evans, Clay Farmer, Fco, Honky Tonk Heroes, Country Jim Sloan, Mitch Jacobs, Bucko Ruckus, Mark Zeus and more surprise guests.
All proceeds from Blanco’s Farewell Party Weekend will be divided up amongst its employees to make the holidays easier while they look for new work.
