In our Where to Happy Hour series, we search Houston’s vast array of neighborhoods for the very best libations.
In the Northwest corridor, just inside the 610 loop, you’ll find the largely residential neighborhoods of Lazybrook and Timbergrove.
German farmers originally settled the area in the late 1800s, and today you’ll find original bungalows and modest cottages alongside new development, parks and retailers, and some pretty stellar happy hour spots.
Where to Happy Hour in Lazybrook & Timbergrove
Cactus Cove
The vibes are right at The Creek Group’s friendly neighborhood bar and grill Cactus Cove.
Hit the patio to sip $4 wells, $5 house wines, and $1 to $2–off beers alongside a selection of $8 “Cheap Ass Bites;” and pop in for weekday specials including $15 beer buckets and $10 burgers on Mondays, $3 street tacos and $7 margs on Tuesdays, Greasy Lips Fried Chicken Wednesday, Thursday Steak Night with $20 bottles of wine, and Frozen Fridays with $7 frozen pints and $2.50 Lone Stars.
Weekdays 3pm to 7pm, plus daily specials.
Down the Street
Fittingly, hip neighborhood bar and eatery Down the Street sits a few blocks down the street from the Lazybrook and Timbergrove border.
Happy hour means you can snag $1-off drafts, $1-off signature cocktails, $4 wells, and $6 select house wines; and there is a lineup of fun weekly specials to hit up, as well—$26 ribeye and $20 bottles of wine during Monday Steak Night; $5 tacos and $8 margs on Tacos & Tequila Tuesday, Wednesday’s Burger & Bingo Night featuring $12 burgers, $4 select Texas brews, and trivia/bingo games; and $8 mules on Thursdays.
Monday through Friday open to 7pm.
Hughie’s Tavern & Grille
Nothing is more Houston than a craft beer bar that serves Vietnamese pub grub, and Hughie’s Tavern & Grille does just that, offering eats from crispy egg rolls and banh mi burgers to lemongrass chicken and shaking beef fried rice alongside a stellar roster of craft brews.
Hit the watering hole for weekly specials, which features deals like Cajun fried fish and beer and half-off wines on Monday, Texas Tuesdays beer specials, $3 fire sale beers and curry shrimp fried rice on Wednesdays, half-off all wine bottles on Thursdays, and reverse weekend happy hour.
Prime 131
This live-fire steakhouse from the prolific restaurant group Berg Hospitality (B&B Butchers & Restaurant, B.B. Lemon, Benny Chow’s, and more) knows how to put on a show.
Join the buzzy happy at Prime 131 to slurp down happy hour oysters, chilled and served with fresh wasabi and ponzu or roasted and hit with chili, coconut and lime; score a $10 deal on its decadent Prime 131 Burger; tack on sushi rolls from crunchy spicy tuna to dragon rolls; and pair it all with expertly crafted cocktails like the Bulleit Old Fashioned or Tequila Sunrise Sausilto.
Monday through Friday 4pm to 6pm.
Star Sailor
Bringing cheer for over three years now, queer-owned beer bar and kitchen Star Sailor has become a Lazybrook staple, rocking a solid roster of craft taps, bottles, and cans, plus coffees and natural wines, alongside eats from street tacos and smash burgers to party charcuterie boards and vegan bbq jackfruit sandwiches.
Enjoy happy hour bites and booze, and look out for live music on the patio, Thursday Vinyl Nights, and fun pop up events.
All day Tuesdays; Wednesday to Sunday 3pm to 6pm.
