In our seasonal My Top 5 series, we feature Houstonians who help to craft the character and culture of our city, resulting in a net positive gain for Houston and the community. In turn, these individuals share their own local go-to choices and tell us how they most enjoy their free time in Houston.

This week, we’re psyched to feature Tina Zulu—founder of both Kimono Zulu, a fashion brand that reimagines Japanese vintage kimonos, and Zulu Creative, a boutique marketing and PR agency—who shares her own Houston favorites on her rare days off.

My Top 5 Things to Do in Houston

by Tina Zulu

  1. The Pop-Up Co-op in The Heights – One of my favorite shops to find the perfect gift for “the girl who has everything” is The Pop-Up Co-op at M-K-T in the Heights. What I love about this boutique is that it features over 45 female-owned businesses, designers & artists—12 of which are local!
  2. The Cottage Shop in Montrose – You’ll often find me sifting through the racks on Mondays when all regular clothing and shoes are 50% off. This resale shop my go-to spot for discovering high-end designer brands and vintage gems at an under-the-radar bargain paradise.
  3. Hillstone in Upper Kirby – Hillstone is my go-to spot for celebrations. Whenever I want a special dinner, it’s my top choice because of their consistent service, quality, and overall experience. I always start with the smoked salmon appetizer and finish with the warm five-nut brownie a la mode. The prime rib French dip is another favorite—you can’t go wrong with it!
  4. Brother’s Taco House in Second Ward – Dare I say, they make the best breakfast tacos in town, and at the best value. Fluffy, scrambled eggs wrapped in fresh tortillas and hot sauce make this my go-to for breakfast cheap eats.
  5. Museum of Fine Arts, Houston in the Museum District – This world-class museum in the heart of Houston is a must-visit. The MFA Shop has a great selection of art-inspired gifts, clothing, jewelry and accessories, and the museum’s galleries feature a wide range of inspiring art, exhibitions and interactive installations. The peaceful sculpture garden is perfect for a quiet moment, and their theater often shows interesting indie films. With the museum always kept at a cool 68 degrees, it’s also the ideal escape from Houston’s summer heatwaves.
