Sunday, October 5[/quote_box_right]The first weekend of October kicks off with the four-day Original Greek Festival in Montrose, three days of Chicano celebrations and performances at Miller Outdoor Theatre in Hermann Park, continuing Oktoberfest celebrations and parties, live music performances, movies screenings under the stars, the Houston Fire Fest, First Saturday Arts Market in the Heights and much more.

  • Mid-Main First Thursday | FREE – Enjoy drinks, art, light bites and live music all evening to support Radio for Peace. Suggested donation for entrance to the Art Garden. 5pm to midnight.
  • Diplomats of Drum at Asia Society Texas Center – Dance to the beat of another’s drum at this unique performance of 13 street performers who have made percussion their profession. $10 non-members; $5 members; discounted $5 tickets available. 7:30pm.
  • Iron Sommelier at the Houstonian – Raise your glass as 13 Houston area Sommeliers compete for the title of 2014 Iron Sommelier. Enjoy food pairings from Neal Cox, Executive Chef of The Houstonian, cheese pairings, cocktails and, of course, wine. $150 in advance; $175 day of event. 6pm to 10pm.
  • Oktoberfest at Saint Arnold Brewery Benefitting Comp-U-Dopt – Bid on a live and silent auction while enjoying unlimited food and drink during an Oktoberfest celebration at Saint Arnold. This event will benefit Comp-U-Dopt – an organization that provides computers and technology education to children in under served communities in the Houston area. $50 in advance; $60 at door benefiting Comp-U-Dopt. 6:30pm to 9:30pm.
  • Wild Moccasins and Buxton in Concert at Discovery Green | FREE – Rock out to two of Houston’s top touring bands with a free concert at Discovery Green. Pop group Wild Moccasins and indie-folk band Buxton will toss a coin at 6pm to determine which band will open. 6:30pm to 10pm.
  • Houston Cougars vs. UCF Knights at TDECU Stadium – The Cougars host Orlando’s University of Central Florida. Tickets start at $10, but you may find cheaper or better seats on TicketNetwork’s resale market. 6pm.
  • Experience Hendrix: Buddy Guy, Jonny Lang and Kenny Wayne Shepherd in Concert at Bayou Music Center – Experience the concert event of the year as these artists join others together on stage to celebrate the music of Jimmy Hendrix. Tickets start at $55, but you may find cheaper or better seats on TicketNetwork’s resale market. 8pm.

  • Houston Pink Out Day – Show your support for Breast Cancer Awareness by adding a little (or a lot) of pink to your wardrobe for Susan G Komen’s 4th annual #pinkoutday.
  • Diabolical: Mephistophelean and Arcane Imagery from the Tattoo World Art Opening at East End Studio Gallery | FREE – Join Houston tattoo artist Gabriel Massey for a unique exhibition that will showcase the work of over 60 tattoo artists from around the world. The show will feature various depictions of the Devil in tattooing. 6pm to 9pm.
  • Happy Gilmore Movie Screening at Discovery Green | FREE – Join Happy, Grandma, Chubbs and the rest of the gang at Discovery Green for a free screening of this 1996 Adam Sandler film. Be sure to bring a chair, picnic and/or blanket, and get there at 6:30 for fun contests and activities. Film is rated PG-13. 7:30pm to 9pm.
  • Hook Movie Screening in the Parking Lot at Whole Foods Montrose | FREE – See a youthful Robin Williams portray a grown up Peter Pan, who’s forgotten about his Neverland past until his old nemesis Captain Hook steals Pan’s daughter. 8pm.
  • Iggy Azalea in Concert at Bayou Music Center – Catch Australian rapper Iggy Azalea as her tour makes a stop in Houston. Tickets start at $40, but you may find cheaper or better seats on TicketNetwork’s resale market. 9pm.
  • Bangarang: Tales from the Darkside at Alamo Drafthouse Vintage Park – Get spooked at a screening of this 1990 horror film. Watch as two children try to save themselves from being eaten by a witch by telling three ghoulish fables. Film is rated R. $9. 10:30pm.
