Sunday, October 5[/quote_box_right]The first weekend of October kicks off with the four-day Original Greek Festival in Montrose, three days of Chicano celebrations and performances at Miller Outdoor Theatre in Hermann Park, continuing Oktoberfest celebrations and parties, live music performances, movies screenings under the stars, the Houston Fire Fest, First Saturday Arts Market in the Heights and much more.

Things to Do All Weekend
- The Original Greek Festival | Daily – Get your Greek on at the 48th Annual Greek Festival. Celebrate with authentic food, music, folk dancing and cathedral tours. Opa! $22 in advance includes one-day admission and a dinner plate; $5 at the gate. Times vary.
- Reefer Madness: The Musical at the Hobby Center | Daily – Laugh along at this tongue-in-cheek musical parody of the 1936 anti-marijuana propaganda film that shows the over-the-top downward spiral of clean cut kids who fall prey to pot. $25 to $49. You may find cheaper or better seats on TicketNetwork’s resale market. Times vary.
- 35th Annual Festival Chicano at Miller Outdoor Theatre | FREE | Thursday to Saturday – Enjoy a cultural celebration featuring a variety of artists that will showcase Tejano, Conjunto, Mariachi and Orchestra music. 7pm nightly.
- Devil Dog Six at Frenetic Theatre | Thursday to Saturday – Race to the Frenetic Theatre to follow the story of a young female jockey as she recovers from a traumatic injury. You’ll witness both sexism and racism as her competitors’ plot to ruin her career is exposed. $20; discounted $10 tickets available for select shows. 8pm nightly. Additional showing on Saturday at 3pm.
- Blithe Spirit at Purple Box Theater | Friday and Saturday – Watch this comedic production of a novelist haunted by the ghost of his first wife who is wreaking havoc on his current marriage. $15; $12 students and seniors; discounted $7.50 tickets available. 8pm both nights.
- Oktoberfest Party with Das Ist Steins at Zum Barrel Tavern | Friday to Sunday – Raise a stein at this Paulaner-sponsored Oktoberfest event complete with German bites, unlimited beer samples, and live music. $15; discounted $9 and comped tickets available. Friday and Saturday 6pm; Sunday 4pm.
- The Playboy of the Western World at UH’s Cynthia Woods Mitchell Center for the Performing Arts | Friday to Sunday – UH School of Theatre & Dance presents a three-act Irish play about love, lies and murder. $20; $15 Faculty/Staff/Alumni; $12 Senior; $10 Student; discounted $10 tickets available. Friday and Saturday 8pm; Sunday 2pm.
- Kemah Oktoberfest | Saturday and Sunday – Put on your Lederhosen and head to the coast for Oktoberfest in Kemah. Celebrate with food, beer imported from Austria, Holland and Germany, live music and dancing in a 9,000-square foot beer tent. $10 Saturday; $5 Sunday. Saturday noon to 11pm; Sunday noon to 6pm.
- Family Activities inside the Loop from BigKidSmallCity | Daily – Find events, recommendations and family-friendly activities from our favorite Houston mom-in-the-know Jill Jarvis of BigKidSmallCity.
- Houston Texans Tickets on Sale | Sponsored – Score tickets to Texans home games. Don’t miss a game and grab hard-to-get seats on the ticket resale market.

- Mid-Main First Thursday | FREE – Enjoy drinks, art, light bites and live music all evening to support Radio for Peace. Suggested donation for entrance to the Art Garden. 5pm to midnight.
- Diplomats of Drum at Asia Society Texas Center – Dance to the beat of another’s drum at this unique performance of 13 street performers who have made percussion their profession. $10 non-members; $5 members; discounted $5 tickets available. 7:30pm.
- Iron Sommelier at the Houstonian – Raise your glass as 13 Houston area Sommeliers compete for the title of 2014 Iron Sommelier. Enjoy food pairings from Neal Cox, Executive Chef of The Houstonian, cheese pairings, cocktails and, of course, wine. $150 in advance; $175 day of event. 6pm to 10pm.
- Oktoberfest at Saint Arnold Brewery Benefitting Comp-U-Dopt – Bid on a live and silent auction while enjoying unlimited food and drink during an Oktoberfest celebration at Saint Arnold. This event will benefit Comp-U-Dopt – an organization that provides computers and technology education to children in under served communities in the Houston area. $50 in advance; $60 at door benefiting Comp-U-Dopt. 6:30pm to 9:30pm.
- Wild Moccasins and Buxton in Concert at Discovery Green | FREE – Rock out to two of Houston’s top touring bands with a free concert at Discovery Green. Pop group Wild Moccasins and indie-folk band Buxton will toss a coin at 6pm to determine which band will open. 6:30pm to 10pm.
- Houston Cougars vs. UCF Knights at TDECU Stadium – The Cougars host Orlando’s University of Central Florida. Tickets start at $10, but you may find cheaper or better seats on TicketNetwork’s resale market. 6pm.
- Experience Hendrix: Buddy Guy, Jonny Lang and Kenny Wayne Shepherd in Concert at Bayou Music Center – Experience the concert event of the year as these artists join others together on stage to celebrate the music of Jimmy Hendrix. Tickets start at $55, but you may find cheaper or better seats on TicketNetwork’s resale market. 8pm.

- Houston Pink Out Day – Show your support for Breast Cancer Awareness by adding a little (or a lot) of pink to your wardrobe for Susan G Komen’s 4th annual #pinkoutday.
- Diabolical: Mephistophelean and Arcane Imagery from the Tattoo World Art Opening at East End Studio Gallery | FREE – Join Houston tattoo artist Gabriel Massey for a unique exhibition that will showcase the work of over 60 tattoo artists from around the world. The show will feature various depictions of the Devil in tattooing. 6pm to 9pm.
- Happy Gilmore Movie Screening at Discovery Green | FREE – Join Happy, Grandma, Chubbs and the rest of the gang at Discovery Green for a free screening of this 1996 Adam Sandler film. Be sure to bring a chair, picnic and/or blanket, and get there at 6:30 for fun contests and activities. Film is rated PG-13. 7:30pm to 9pm.
- Hook Movie Screening in the Parking Lot at Whole Foods Montrose | FREE – See a youthful Robin Williams portray a grown up Peter Pan, who’s forgotten about his Neverland past until his old nemesis Captain Hook steals Pan’s daughter. 8pm.
- Iggy Azalea in Concert at Bayou Music Center – Catch Australian rapper Iggy Azalea as her tour makes a stop in Houston. Tickets start at $40, but you may find cheaper or better seats on TicketNetwork’s resale market. 9pm.
- Bangarang: Tales from the Darkside at Alamo Drafthouse Vintage Park – Get spooked at a screening of this 1990 horror film. Watch as two children try to save themselves from being eaten by a witch by telling three ghoulish fables. Film is rated R. $9. 10:30pm.
