Take a gander at a vivid tribute to Houston’s bayou system and transportation in general at Patrick Renner‘s Conduit on display at Eastwood Park in the East End through November 30, 2014.
Patrick Renner, the Houston artist who created the excessively popular Funnel Tunnel in Montrose, recently debuted his delightfully quirky new public artwork Conduit as part of Houston Arts Alliance’s Transported + Renewed program. Conduit colorfully re-imagines Houston’s waterways as the thread that connects all things moving.
Temporarily on display at Eastwood Park in the Greater East End, the interactive sculpture features a fanciful series of conveyances traversing a colorful bayou, represented by strips of painted wooden strips. The wood pieces, which are largely blue and purple, were created and prepared in the same style as those used in the Funnel Tunnel.
However, the real showpieces are suspended above the bayou, reflecting the diverse array of transportation tied to Houston, including an automobile, rocket ship, dragon boat, food truck and a wheel of bicycles. Most of these vehicle can be moved or wiggled from handles, ropes and rods that emerge from the bottom of the wooden bayou.
Visiting Patrick Renner’s Conduit
The exhibit stands on the southwest corner of Harrisburg Boulevard and Dumble and is easily viewable as you drive by. However, to enjoy the interactive elements or get the right angle for your photos you’ll want to park and get out of the car.
The exhibit is just a few steps away from a popular playground, with swings, slides and more. So if you bring little ones, they’ll have find plenty to do besides just play with the public art’s interactive features.
