In our Park Spotlight series, we take a closer look at Houston’s vast array of public recreational areas to shine a light on hidden and not so hidden gems. This week we’ll be spotlighting Cullinan Park. Join us as we take a trip through Houston, park by park.
Located in the heart of Sugar Land at Oyster Creek, the vast Cullinan Park stands as an oasis in a continually expanding urban environment on the west side of Highway 6 on the southwestern outskirts of Greater Houston.
Dedicated as a park in 1989, the area was purchased because of its potential to be an invaluable, natural green asset to the city. Today, the preserve does just that with its lakes, meadows, bird-watching, trails, and picnic areas spread across more than 750 acres of prairie and woods.
Due to the sheer size of the park, the Cullinan Park Conservancy is currently developing plans for the preservation, restoration, and appreciation of this expansive space.
The parks board will continues to assist in the development of the park with low-intensity improvements to ensure the natural gem is preserved in a city experiencing rapid urban growth.
