Top Performing Arts Openings This Week: October 9 to 15, 2023

  • Paul Hope Cabaret presents Star Dust: The Songs of Hoagy Carmichael at Ovations | Monday, October 9 | Ongoing – With a mission to keep the music of the Great American Songbook alive, these cabaret performances offer insights to mid-century music, and bring some of Houston’s best vocal talent to the stage. Carmichael is known for “Georgia,” “Star Dust,” “Lazy River” and more. Spend a Monday night with an ensemble that’s doing exceptional singing work. $15 and up. 7:30pm.
  • Chamber Music Houston presents Jerusalem String Quartet at Rice University’s Stude Concert Hall | Tuesday, October 10 – Hear the Israeli ensemble BBC Music calls “a triumph” in a program that includes selections from Haydn, Debussy and Paul Ben-Haim. Since their founding in 1993, the group has earned worldwide acclaim and their return to CMH’s concert stage should be a season highlight. $20 and up. 7:30pm.
  • Dia de la Hispanidad: Ida y Vuelta at Miller Outdoor Theatre | Friday, October 13 | FREE – Explore the rich history of music in the Americas and the way Indigenous cultures and Europe influenced the sounds of the continents. This full-scale production touches on the musical culture of Peru, Chile, Venezuela, Mexico and many others through music, dance, and magnificent costumes. 7:30pm.
  • Viva Latin America with Guillermo Dávila and El Coque Muñiz at Zilkha Hall | Friday, October 13 – Latin recording artists Guillermo Dávila and El Coque Muñiz join the Houston Latin American Philharmonic to close out Hispanic Heritage Month with a program of cultural highlights. Tickets TBA. 8pm.
  • Live at the Founders Club: The Songs of Tony Bennett at Hobby Center | Friday, October 13 & Saturday, October 14 – This evening of jazz by saxophonist Shelley Carrol and saxophonist/vocalist David Caceres includes songs you know by heart, including “I Left My Heart in San Francisco,” “New York State of Mind” and more. $40 and up. Friday at 7:30pm; Saturday at 7pm and 9pm.
  • Ragamala Dance Company presents Ananta, The Eternal at Asia Society Texas | Saturday, October 14 – Body, memory, desire and devotion are woven into this new dance work by Aparna Ramaswamy, who is joined on stage by her sister Ashwini for an evening of solos and duets. $35. 7:30pm.
  • Music Box Theater presents Broadway at the Box at Queensbury Theatre | Saturday, October 14 | Ongoing – The Music Box Theater ensemble returns to their Broadway roots in this show that includes blockbuster Tony Award winners, new musicals and more. This eclectic cabaret has something for everyone. $38 and up. Times vary.
  • I’m Not a Comedian… I’m Lenny Bruce at Evelyn Rubenstein JCC | Saturday, October 14 & Sunday, October 15 – Explore the legendary life and death of funnyman and free speech champion Lenny Bruce, portrayed by actor Ronnie Mario in a performance that’s been lauded by the comedian’s real life friends, family, and fans. The show explores Bruce’s personal pain, sharply funny social commentary and completely original, freestyle comedy that left a lasting impact on today’s poetry, politics, music, film, and comedy. $45 and up. Times vary.

Catch the final performance of the acclaimed Waiting for Godot from Catastrophic Theatre at MATCH on Saturday, October 14.
