Top Performing Arts Openings This Week: June 26 to July 2, 2023
- AD Players presents Smoke on the Mountain at the George Theater | Wednesday, June 28 | Ongoing – It’s 1938 in a small North Carolina town nestled in the Smoky Mountains, where the Saunders Family, a traveling musical group, is making an appearance after a five-year absence. This family-friendly musical incorporates two dozen bluegrass tunes folded around stories told by the Saunders family. This production runs through Sunday, July 23. $28 and up. Showtimes vary.
- Phenomenal Woman at Ensemble Theatre | Thursday, June 29 | Ongoing – This musical showcases the remarkable life of the iconic writer and activist Maya Angelou, and demonstrates why her life and words continue to inspire. $53 and up. Showtimes vary.
- Houston Musical Theater Company: Puttin’ on the Ritz at Post Houston | Friday, June 30 – Houston Musical Theater Company brings their award-winning, smash-hit musical revue Puttin’ on the Ritz back for an encore performance at the Post Houston. $35. 7:30pm.
- Houston Symphony presents Summer Symphony Nights at Miller Outdoor Theatre | Friday, June 30 & Saturday, July 1 | FREE – The orchestra presents the final two performances of a concert series that includes Beethoven’s Symphony No. 7, Ravel’s Tzigane, and guest pianist Clayton Stephenson to perform Gershwin’s Concerto in F. 8:30pm.

Five productions draw final curtains this week, all of them ending on Sunday, July 2; Wicked at Hobby Center, The Servant of Two Masters at Alley Theatre, Hair at Art Factory near Downtown, and both Stages productions, Drag Wonderettes and The Legend of Georgia McBride.
