In our Park Spotlight series, we take a closer look at Houston’s vast array of public recreational areas to shine a light on hidden and not so hidden gems. This week we’ll be spotlighting Cherryhurst Park. Join us as we take a trip through Houston, park by park.
Located in the heart of Montrose, the quaint Cherryhurst Park offers residents an opportunity to engage in sustainable gardening through a year-round “Living Wall” garden that encourages hands-on community learning.
Complete with a small playground, a lighted tennis court, a large green space and park benches, it would be very easy to miss this shaded park, given that its location is just one side street away from the bar and restaurant scene that dominate the Westheimer Curve.
Stop by mid-week during the day to grab more easily accessible parking. The park is located just behind the ever-popular Anvil Bar & Refuge, amongst other hotspots, so parking can be hard to come by on the weekends.
The Vertical Garden
“The Living Wall” vertical garden provides the children in HPARD’s Enrichment Programs hands-on opportunities to learn sustainability within a bustling, urban environment.
With the addition of the Living Wall, Cherryhurst Park now has an ongoing educational experience that will continue to be maintained by children in HPARD’s After School Enrichment Program at the park and by volunteers from the Cherryhurst community each year after the Summer Enrichment Program ends.
