• Mezclada Dance Company presents All of the Above at MATCH | Thursday, January 12 & Friday, January 13 – Take in a new dance work from Mezclada Dance Company, which features a range of dance techniques from breakdancing and contemporary to salsa, hip-hop and more, all set to tunes that include funk and Latin jazz, salsa and classical melodies. $25. 7:30pm.
• Houston Salsa Congress at Westin Houston Memorial City | Thursday, January 12 to Sunday, January 16 – This annual salsa expo offers multiple days of live music, social dancing, workshops and lessons, competitions, and more. Single night passes start at $25; full event passes are $275. Times vary.
• Houston Grand Opera presents The Marriage of Figaro at Wortham Center | Friday, January 13 – The company’s take on this sparkling Mozart comedy sets the opera in 1960s Francoist Spain, awash in colors and costumes that evoke the Moroccan influence on Muslim Spain. Figaro, a servant to the Count Almaviva is set to marry the countess’ maid, Susanna and then, hilarity ensues. $20 and up. 7pm.
• Sketch ‘Em All: A Pokemon Art Show at Hardy & Nance Studios | Friday, January 13 | FREE – Houston artists pay homage to the expansive kingdom of Pokemon in the return of this art series at Hardy & Nance, after a pandemic hiatus. Kids and dogs are welcome at this event that also will be serving Eureka Heights brews, wine and cocktails. 7pm to 11pm.
• Be Our Guest: the Disney DJ Night at Rise Rooftop – The popular Midtown rooftop hosts a night of DJs spinning ’90s and 2000s throwback classics from the Disney universe. $18. 9pm.

• The Riot Comedy Club presents Adrienne Iapalucci at Rudyard’s Pub | Friday, January 13 & Saturday, January 14 – The comic known for spots on Netflix’s Degenerates, This Week at the Comedy Cellar, and The Late Show with David Letterman, as well as co-host of the weekly podcast Vadge with fellow comic Sarah Tollemache, Adrienne Iapalucci performs three sets across back-to-back nights. $17 and up. 7pm and 9pm.
• Comedian Jay Pharaoh at Houston Improv | Friday, January 13 to Sunday, January 15 – Known for his hilarious impressions and six-season run as cast member on Saturday Night Live, Jay Pharoah works the room for five shows across this weekend. Tickets are sold by the table; $60 for 2, and up. Times vary.
• 8-Year Anniversary Party at Ladybird’s | Saturday, January 14 | No Cover – The laidback Rice Military bar celebrates 8 years with an anniversary bash that features a pop-up dinner, bands, a raffle and a DJ spinning into the late night. 6pm to 2am.
• William Shatner & Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan at Smart Financial Centre | Saturday, January 14 – Captain Kirk himself will be in attendance for a screening of the 1982 classic, Star Trek II: the Wrath of Khan, followed by a discussion of the film and his career, and then audience questions. $42.75 and up. 7:30pm.
• 70th Annual Charity Cat Show at Hilton Houston North | Saturday, January 14 & Sunday, January 15 – Feline fanatics rejoice at the Houston Cat Club’s 70th Annual Charity Cat Show, where cats abound are judged on their smarts and agility throughout the two-day show. Make sure to check out the cat costume contests, shop vendors at the Meow Mall, and stop by cat rescue groups if you’re in search of your own feline friend. $15; $10 for ages 5 to 12; free for ages 4 and under. Saturday 9am to 5pm; Sunday 9am to 4pm.

• Chevron Houston Marathon & Aramco Half Marathon in Downtown Houston | Sunday, January 15 – Now in its 51st year, Houston’s signature run event lines up registered runners for a meandering course that takes them through the city’s districts like Montrose, Medical Center, the Galleria, Memorial Park and back again to finish at Avenida de las Americas. While it’s too late to lace ’em up if you missed registration, you can still celebrate thousands of runners across the city along the marathon course. 7am to 2:30pm.
• Hop Topic World’s Annual Chili Cook-Off at Equal Parts Brewing | Sunday, January 15 – Taste through chilis and enjoy Equal Parts craft beers at this annual chili cook-off, held in Second Ward off Harrisburg. General admission includes unlimited chili samples, a swag bag for early bird tickets, and a token for voting. $18. Noon; judging begins at 2pm.
• 6th Annual Family Fun Day at MATCH | Sunday, January 15 | FREE – Back again after a two-year hiatus, the free annual tradition returns with an afternoon of kid-friendly performances and opportunities to explore the arts as a family. In addition to arts performances, kiddos will have the chance to have their face painted, hop into bounce houses, and enjoy balloon artists, stilt walkers and more, all afternoon long. 1pm to 5pm.
• 2023 Annual MLK Birthday Observance at Rothko Chapel | Sunday, January 15 – Inspired by the MFAH’s current exhibition Gordon Parks: Stokely Carmichael and Black Power, panelists share their work and perspectives on how photographers and journalists shape narratives around social justice movements and leaders. Pay-what-you-can; suggested donation is $5 to $20. 3pm.
• Chefs for Paws at C. Baldwin Hotel | Sunday, January 15 – Annual fundraising dinner Chefs for Paws is back to celebrate another year of saving lives. Guests can enjoy a seated, multi-course dinner from some of Houston’s top chefs and restaurants—including Alyssa Dole, Sasha Grumann, Graham Laborde, Paul Qui, Tim Reading, and more, with all proceeds going to Rescued Pets Movement’s lifesaving mission. $250 and up. 5pm to 9pm.
