Discover the changing landscape of Houston’s historic East End through a skateboarding lens at the opening of Back/Side at Box 13 ArtSpace on Saturday, November 19, 2016.

A collaborative exhibition by skaters David Langston, Ian Richardson, and Dakota Roberson, Back/Side finds the Houston natives highlighting their mutual love for skateboarding and the community it develops through the construction of site-specific skateable structures, transitional ramp pieces, and film into the space.

As residents of Eastwood, a historic neighborhood in the East End area of Houston, this exhibition documents the current state of the rapidly-changing face of the neighborhood, while demonstrating to the public that there is an artistic merit to why your next door neighbor’s son won’t quit skateboarding past 10pm.

The installation allows viewers with little knowledge of skating to understand and relate to how skateboarders can apply their abilities, using the structures as tools to express their individuality and creativity.

Three Exhibition Openings

In addition to Back/Side‘s opening, Rachelle Vasquez’s mystical Those That Feel the Influence of the Stars and Kevin Link’s brain entrainment installation Delta will be on view during the triple opening night party.

Back/Side will be on view in the downstairs Back Box area through Saturday, January 7, 2017, with the opening this Saturday, November 19 from 7pm to 9pm.
