Grab a deluxe gourmet hot dog, topped fresh fixings and handcrafted condiments, for lunch or dinner at Good Dog on Studewood in Montrose.

Yet another Houston food truck success story, Good Dog had its origins in the cramped kitchen of a mobile eatery. Although the truck is still around, and still makes special event appearances, your best bet for finding fresh, delicious dogs is at Good Dog’s headquarters, which opened in the Heights in November 2013.

The warm, light and casual restaurant boasts two outdoor decks, a bar specializing in Texas and craft beers, and what might be the friendliest staff on Studewood and White Oak combined. But what really seals the deal are the gourmet hot dogs, served on artisan buns baked fresh by Houston’s Slow Dough Bread Company.

In addition to the restaurant’s signature Good Dog, which is an all-fresh and gourmet update on a traditional hot dog with the works, this Houston hot dog restaurant is known for an array of unique, flavorful dogs. The Chi-Town Dog includes tomato slices, pickled peppers, dill pickle slices, Sweet Blakeslee Relish. The Ol’ Zapata is dressed with bacon, muenster cheese, caramelized onions, tomatoes and jalapeño relish. The “lighter” Guac-A-Dog is topped with avocado, fresh jalapeno, tomatoes, diced onion, roasted garlic aioli, cilantro, cumin and lime.

Chef and co-owner Amalia Pferd oversees the making of all house condiments. Preservative free and made from scratch, they include Good Dog ketchup, Sriracha ketchup, mayonnaise, roasted garlic aioli and more.

Good Dog’s standard hot dog is 85% beef and 15% pork, however you can also request an all-beef or tofu hot dog.
