Celebrate Mexico’s independence from Spain at Mexican Fiesta Patrias events around Houston from Thursday, September 12 leading up to Dieciséis de septiembre itself; Monday, September 16, 2013.
Officially, Mexico’s official patriotic independence day holidays begin the evening of September 15, kicked off by the symbolic Grito de Dolores. The name comes from Father Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla in the village of Dolores, whose call out (the grito) for and end to Spanish rule, in 1810. Fifteen years later, the Republic of Mexico chose that historic event as the start of their independence, selecting the day that followed it as Mexico’s Dia de la Indepencia.
We’ve rounded up some of the key Mexican independence celebrations and events going on around Houston for Fiesta Patrias.
- Fiesta Patrias Celebration at The Children’s Museum of Houston | Thursday, September 12, 2013 | Free – Kids and families can enjoy games, ballet folklórico and mariachi performances, a reenactment of the famous “Grito de Dolores, traditional games and art projects. 5pm to 8pm.
- Calaveras Mexicanas: The Art and Influence of José Guadalupe Posada at Museum of Fine Arts Houston | Friday, September 13, 2013 | Free – Starting at 10am, this new art exhibition commemorates the 100th anniversary of the death of José Guadalupe Posada (1852–1913), considered the father of Mexican printmaking. See about 50 of the artist’s prints that explore the continuing resonance of his work.
- Fechas Patrias: A celebration of Mexican Independence | Friday, September 13, 2013 | Free – Head to the opening of artist Lilibeth Andre’s Mexico Series exhibition at Talento Bilingue de Houston, the latino cultural arts center just a little northeast of EaDo. 6pm to 9pm.
- 45th Annual Fiestas Patrias Parade Houston | Saturday, September 14, 2013 | Free – For the 45th year, Houston’s Fiesta Patrias Parade celebrating Mexico’s independence from Spain marches through Downtown. Starting at 10am at the intersection of Texas and Jackson, the parade will head west on Texas to San Jacinto. It will take San Jacinto up to Preston, and then turn to follow Preston to its conclusion at Crawford. It should wrap up around noon.
- Fiestas Patrias Festival and Concert at Traders Village | Sunday, September 15, 2013 | Free – Sunny Ozuna and the Sunliners headline Trader Village’s 7th annual Fiesta Patrias event at their large outdoor flea market on Eldridge Road just off of Highway 290. Admission is free, though plan to pay $3 for parking. Noon to 4pm.
- El Grito at Miller Outdoor Theatre | Sunday, September 15, 2013 | Free – See Mexican norteño musician and superstar Raúl Hernández, best-known for his many years with Los Tigres del Norte, and Los Humildes de Los Hermanos Ayala.
