Since 1978, this Montrose neighborhood bar and grill near the intersection of Waugh Drive and Welch Street has been a Houston staple for laid back evenings, craft beer, and under-the-radar live music. Inside the long-enduring brick walls, tables and chairs cover the classic checkered tile floor, spilling out onto a streetside patio. In a side room, pool tables, darts, and shuffleboard help to fill long evenings with friends and televisions throughout Rudyard’s are known to carry the latest hometown teams.In the main room, a staircase leads visitors into an upstairs area that is usually reserved for one of Rudyard’s frequent events. Here, a corner stage overlooking the street plays host to local and touring musicians, as well as comedians and other signature events from local theater and improv companies. The versatile floor space can shift from standing room-only to a spread of tables and chairs for performances from a wide range of genres, including punk, indie, alt rock, and many forms of local bands. An extensive selection of draught and bottled beer is stocked at an available bar on each floor, as well as a full kitchen that serves up a huge menu of pub food, including the well-known Rudyard’s Burger with tots. Two surface parking lots are nearby along Welch Street, with additional street parking available in the surrounding neighborhood.
