• DiverseWorks presents D.R.E.A.M = A Way to Afram at MATCH | Wednesday, September 6 to Saturday, September 9 – This immersive performance and installation features the work of Houston’s Li(sa E.) Harris in collaboration with Alisha B. Wormsley. Using sound, movement and visuals, this experience explores how the universe reveals safe spaces for Black beings to exist in their bodies. • AD Players presents Forever Plaid at the George Theater | Wednesday, September 6 | Ongoing – The Plaids are on their way to a gig when they’re hit by a bus and killed instantly. What happens when they return from the afterlife for one final show? The answer lies in this beloved musical filled with barbershop harmonies and enchanting melodies. • Classical Theatre Company presents Medea at the DeLuxe Theater | Thursday, September 7 | Ongoing – Euripides’ classic Greek tragedy is the story of Medea and her hero husband Jason. When Jason tires of their marriage, Medea vows revenge on him and his new bride. Her actions will leave audiences’ heads spinning. $30. Showtimes vary.
• Bryan Anderson in Concert at the Rice University’s Alice Pratt Brown Hall | Friday, September 8 | FREE – The organist and Rice University alum, who won First Prize at the 2023 Longwood Gardens International Organ Competition, performs a guest recital at the Shepherd School of Music. See why The Classical Voice of North Carolina called his playing “simply first class.” 7:30pm.
• Cloud Tectonics at MATCH | Friday, September 8 to Sunday, September 10 – This is the story of Celestina, a woman who exists beyond the bounds of time, who serendipitously meets an unlikely friend, Aníbal, during a once-in-a-lifetime storm in Los Angeles. Amidst environmental and political turmoil, they come to love each other in the safety of Aníbal’s home. Pay-what-you-can. Showtimes vary.
• Houston Ballet presents A Midsummer Night’s Dream at Wortham Center | Friday, September 8 | Ongoing – Based on the classic Shakespeare rom-com, this is the story of a love potion gone awry. It’s one of choreographer John Neumeier’s most famous ballets, with a score that combines selections from Mendelssohn and Ligeti, along with traditional organ music. $25 and up. Showtimes vary.
• The Greatest Play in the History of the World at Spring Street Studios | Friday, September 8 | Ongoing – A love story set in space, this play starring Kacie Adams asks profound questions with deep sincerity while balancing the human quest for meaningful connections. It’s also about shoes. $20. 8pm.
• 9 to 5: The Musical at Crighton Theater | Friday, September 8 | Ongoing – The Conroe theater hosts this show, based on the hit ’80s movie about a group of secretaries trying to advance in the workplace, forming friendship and a revenge pact along the way. Running across three weeks, the show features music and lyrics by Dolly Parton, written by Patricia Resnick. $30. Showtimes vary.
