Take in the journey of Popes through life, death and sainthood at the Celebrating the Lives & Deaths of Popes permanent exhibit at National Museum of Funeral History (NMFH)—part of our Explore the NMFH series.

In Celebrating the Lives & Deaths of Popes, visitors can experience the many stages of preparation and burial of a Pope and see exact replicas of Saint John Paul II’s original crypt, along with reproductions of the coffins used to bury three previous Popes. Visitors are transported into a Papal funeral complete with theatrical lighting, multimedia presentations and full-scale replicas of funeral settings inside the Vatican.

NMFH worked with the Vatican for over three years to create this permanent exhibit, and its latest additions chronicle the making of a Catholic saint. From beatification to canonization, visitors can learn about the Sainthood of Pope John Paul II and Pope John XXIII through Papal artifacts and memorabilia obtained at great effort through the museum’s connections.
