Oktoberfest is kicking off with events at Zum Barrel Tavern and King’s Biergarten, the Houston Symphony is performing a show featuring the music of Game of Thrones and Downton Abbey, Discovery Green is going to the dogs for the DockDogs competition and more.

  • BeerBanner300x250_finalHouston Fringe Festival | Daily – Enjoy a series of performances, visual art exhibits and other displays of zaniness at this annual festival happening at the Barn, Frenetic Theater and Super Happy Fun Land. Individual tickets are $10. Multiple show passes range from $45 to $90.
  • King’s Oktoberfest Kick-Off | Friday to Sunday – Go all in for Oktoberfest 2013 at King’s Oktoberfest Kick-Off Weekend at King’s Biergarten in Pearland. $10; $20 VIP and underage tickets. Friday 5pm to midnight; Saturday and Sunday noon to 9pm.
  • Reefer Madness: The Musical at the Hobby Center | Daily – Laugh along at this tongue-in-cheek musical parody of the 1936 anti-marijuana propaganda film that shows the over-the-top downward spiral of clean cut kids who fall prey to pot. $25 to $49. You may find cheaper or better seats on TicketNetwork’s resale market. Times vary.
  • Splendid China IX at Miller Outdoor Theatre | FREE | Friday to Saturday – Experience a program of China’s top ranking dance companies performing the best in dance from the other side of the world. 8pm both nights.
  • 5th Annual Galveston Island Wild Texas Shrimp Festival | Friday to Sunday – Dive in for three days of shrimp, music, friends and more at this event featuring a cook-off and gumbo stroll. Events and times vary.
  • Houston Symphony presents TV’s Greatest Hits at Jones Hall | Friday to Sunday – The symphony takes on the music of Game of Thrones, Downton Abbey and more at this pop culture performance that is sure to delight. You may find cheaper or better seats on TicketNetwork’s resale market. 8pm nightly.
  • Dog Days at Discovery Green | FREE | Friday through Sunday – See three days of doggie competition as DockDogs returns to Houston and pups of all shapes and sizes undertake challenges such as the high-jump and long-jump off a 20-foot pier. There will also be a doggie costume contest on Saturday from 4:30pm to 6pm. The America’s Got Talent-winning Olate Dogs will perform Saturday and Sunday evenings.
  • Manhattan Short Film Festival at MFAH | Saturday and Sunday – Take in 10 short films, also screening in cities across the world this week, and vote on your favorite in this international competition. $10. Saturday 7pm; Sunday 5pm.
  • Victor/Victoria at Hobby Center | Daily – See the hilarious award-winning musical about desperation, love and gender roles that opens Theatre Under the Stars’ 2014-15 season. Tickets start at $25 but you may find cheaper or better seats on TicketNetwork’s resale market. Times vary.
  • Houston Ballet presents From Houston to the World at Wortham Theater Center | Friday to Sunday – Enjoy the works of three choreographers in this mixed-repertory program that was originally choreographed for the Houston Ballet. $20. Times vary.
  • Lord of the Flies at the The Kaleidoscope Theater | Daily – See a fresh take on this harrowing commentary on society as an all female cast portrays William Golding’s 1954 novel about boys stranded on an island. $35; discounted $17.50 tickets available. Thursday to Saturday 8pm; Sunday 5pm.
  • Family Activities inside the Loop from BigKidSmallCity | Daily – Find events, recommendations and family-friendly activities from our favorite Houston mom-in-the-know Jill Jarvis of BigKidSmallCity.
