In “My Top 5” we turn the spotlight on Houstonians who are helping to shape our city and its culture. This week, we’re very pleased to feature Chef Shannen Tune of Hotel Derek’s Revolve Kitchen + Bar, and share his favorite things to do in Houston.

My Top 5 Things to Does in Houston

by Shannen Tune

  • Top Golf – I don’t get much free time, but when I do, this is where I like to go to Top Golf. This is my “man time.” I don’t have to commit to playing 18 holes, I can work on my swing, and I can play in any weather. It’s the best of all worlds. My beautiful wife and kiddos are not as enamored with it as I am, but that’s okay because I know one day the kids will love it (my wife, not so much) – and in the meantime, I get some time for myself.
  • Houston Museum of Natural Science – I feel extremely fortunate to live in a city with so many museum options. There are a lot to choose from, but the Houston Museum of Natural Science is where I completely nerd out. I love history, and this place seems to have it all. And of course, after leaving the museum, you’re in Hermann Park and have a slew of free things to do with the family, like rolling down the Miller Outdoor Theatre hill.
  • Kiran’s – It’s one of the best meals I’ve had in Houston. Chef Kiran (Verma) really is the Godmother of Indian fine dining. My wife is Jamaican and Kiran’s curry shrimp reminds her of home, and I love that.
  • Glazed: The Doughnut Cafe – Glazed is the unicorn of donut shops. Seriously. My favorite is The Macon – maple and bacon on a doughnut. They make their doughnuts from scratch and are open 24 hours. Treat yourself and head over there.
  • Houston Zoo – The Houston Zoo is a family favorite, for sure. Not every city is lucky enough to have a zoo, and Houston’s is really outstanding. We are big fans of the giraffes, and the kids love feeding them lettuce. Of course, now all of our focus is on the gorillas that are coming. We have been watching them build the new habitat and will be first in line when they arrive.
