Our My Top 5 feature showcases Houstonians who are shaping the culture in the city and impacting people’s lives. In turn, they share their own favorite things to do in Houston when they’re not hard at work. This week, we’re very pleased to feature Zahira Gutierrez, lead vocalist and song-writer of Wild Moccasins.

My Top 5 Things to Do in Houston

by Zahira Gutierrez

  1. Doshi House – This is my favorite coffee shop in town. They have great coffee and amazing vegetarian food on top of that. I love going there for the vegan fajita Friday dinners, but you can get the empanadas any day of the week!
  2. Top Vintage Clothing – This warehouse is pure vintage heaven! You have to dig around a bit, but it’s absolutely worth it. I’ve found some of my current favorite pieces there and the owners are always super sweet and helpful. You have to make an appointment to shop there, but they are pretty flexible.
  3. The Menil Collection – I think that Houston is extremely lucky to have the Menil Collection. I’m never disappointed when I stop by. Their surrealism section is incredible. They also provide great events. Plus it’s always free!
  4. The Place Upstairs – This shop which is located in the heart of Mid-Main is like walking into an American Horror Story episode. It’s fascinating the things they find! The thing I love most about this place is how passionate the owners are. They will tell you anything about any piece you find there. I’ve gotten some pretty bizarre jewelry that I couldn’t have found anywhere else.
  5. Cullen Sculpture Garden – Located across the street from the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, this is a nice area to go eat lunch, read a book, or to just be alone with your thoughts. One of my favorite Wild Moccasins photo shoots was actually shot on location there. I picked that particular place not only for the wonderful artwork, but because it’s one of the many hidden gems Houston has to offer.
