Since 1987, Wortham Theater Center has served as the resident venue of productions by Houston Ballet and Houston Grand Opera. One of the go-to destinations in Downtown’s Theater District, Wortham consists of the 2,405-capacity Brown Theater and the 1,100-seat Cullen Theater.
Performances at Wortham Theater Center are often on the cutting edge of stage production, incorporating digital effects, projections, and extravagant set design to offer contemporary twists on many of the world’s most beloved stories.
An annual holiday tradition, Houston Ballet’s The Nutcracker remains one of the most popular events at Wortham Theater Center. In addition to stage productions, ballet, and opera, both theaters at the Wortham are known to host visiting comedians, musicians, and other special live engagements.
The largest of the two theaters, Brown Theater consists of an orchestra level of seating, three tiers of boxes, a grand tier, and a balcony level—though no seat is ever further than 138 feet from the stage. The smaller Cullen Theater features an orchestra level and a mezzanine.
Pre-performance meals, snacks, and drinks are offered at Wortham Theater Center, and the surrounding area is ripe with more restaurants and bars for pre- and post-show gatherings. There is no strict dress code at performances and guests’ clothing will range from casual to formal, with a majority in suits or dresses.
Parking & Getting There
Street parking is available in the surrounding area, though fills up quickly on performance nights. Several garages in the area also provide easy access to the theater, including the underground Theater District lot (entrances on Rusk and Capitol Streets) or the Alley Theatre garage across the street (entrances on Louisiana and Prairie Streets). MetroRail features a Green and Purple line station just outside the nearby Bayou Place.
When arriving for a performance, it’s recommended to show up at least a half hour ahead of time, as parking can be a slow-going challenge. Late arrivals will be seated during intermission, unless noted otherwise.
