Even though the official start of summer still more than a week away, the summer season is certainly upon us.  Cool indoors and muggy outdoors are once again the norm.

And there’s a full weekend ahead with the Houston Beer Festival taking over City Hall and Hermann Square Park in Downtown, Hairspray delighting audiences on the hillside at Miller Outdoor Theatre, the LGBT celebration Rainbow on the Green taking over Discovery Green, Houston’s first ever Major League Lacrosse event and much, much more.

  • First Date at Hobby Center | Daily – TUTS Underground presents its production of the hilarious Broadway musical that takes place in real time as blind date newbie Aaron is set up with serial dater Casey. $39 to $49; limited discounted $19.50 to $34.50 tickets available. Times vary.
  • Houston Asian American Pacific Islander Film Festival at International Trade Center | Friday and Saturday | FREE – Embrace Asian Pacific American culture through the screening of films like Fatakra and Saving Face during HAAPIFF at the International Trade Center.  Actor and producer Brian Yang of Linsanity will be in attendance for a discussion with the audience after the screening of his film on Friday evening. Premium seating tickets and packages start at $10. 6pm to 10pm Friday; 10am to 10pm Saturday.
  • Hairspray at Miller Outdoor Theatre | Friday and Saturday – Sing along to tunes from the Tony Award-winning musical Hairspray during this free performance at Miller Outdoor Theatre. 8:15pm both nights.
  • Houston Astros vs. Seattle Mariners Series at Minute Maid Park | Friday to Sunday – Cheer the Astros to a victory over the Seattle Mariners during this three game series at Minute Maid Park. Tickets start at $10, but you may find cheaper or better seats on TicketNetwork or Ticket Monster’s resale sites. 7:10pm Friday; 3:10pm Saturday; 1:10pm Sunday.
  • A Midsummer Night’s Dream at Houston Family Arts Center | Friday to Sunday – Catch the family-friendly production of Shakespeare’s comedic tale of fairies and fantasy. $23; limited discounted $11.50 tickets available. Times vary.
  • Sunset Boulevard at The Kaleidoscope Theater | Friday to Sunday – Hollywood noir meets Broadway razzle-dazzle in Andrew Lloyd Webber’s musical adaptation of Billy Wilder’s classic film. Produced by Bayou City Theatrics. $40; limited discounted$20 tickets available. Times vary.
  • Houston Beer Festival at Hermann Square Park | Saturday and Sunday – Throw one back at the Houston Beer Festival. Sample brews from local, national and international breweries, listen to live music performances and enjoy food and activities during this two day festival. $50 weekend pass; $25 weekend pass concert only; $175 weekend pass VIP; $35 day pass; $20 day pass concert only; $200 Saturday pass VIP; $100 Sunday pass VIP. Tickets can be purchased in advance by clicking here. Noon to 10pm Saturday; Noon to 8pm Sunday.
  • Pop Shop Houston Summer Festival at Silver Street Studios | Saturday and Sunday | FREE to Attend – Get creative at the Pop Shop Houston Summer Festival. Rock out to beats from DJs No Fun, Hayden Jones, FREDster and Ceeplus Bad Knives, enjoy art and food from local trucks. Purchase a workshop pass to make your own candle, terrarium, flower crown and more. $18 VIP Pass; $15 to $50 workshop passes. Noon to 9pm Saturday; noon to 7pm Sunday.
  • Bands on the Sand in Galveston | Saturday and Sunday – Listen to tunes from Velvet Punch and Jared Waggoner and enjoy fireworks during this concert on the water at Palm Beach. This event is part of the Bands on the Sand series. $12; concert included with day pass and memberships. 6pm both nights.
  • The 39 Steps at Stage Door Inc. | Friday to Sunday – See the hilarious theatrical version of Alfred Hitchcock’s The 39 Steps from Stage Door Inc. The cast of only four will play over 150 characters. $15 in advance; $20 at the door; limited discounted $10 tickets available. 8pm Friday and Saturday; 3pm Sunday.

  • Summerfest at Southdown Park in Pearland | FREE – Bring a blanket and lay out in the grass at Southdown Park to listen to music from Modulation Band. This free event is part of Pearland’s Summerfest concert series. 7pm to 9pm.
  • Disney in Concert at the Cynthia Woods Mitchell PavilionHear a concert of Disney songs from the Houston Symphony during this evening concert in The Woodlands. $20; free mezzanine and lawn seating. 8pm.
  • Geto Boys Reunion in the Office Space Tour at House of Blues – Houston’s own Geto Boys, whose “Damn It Feels Good to be a Gangster” became an anthem for Mike Judge’s 1999 comedy Office Space, reunite for their Office Space Tour. $25; limited discounted $12.50 tickets available. 8:30pm.
