Although cremation has eclipsed traditional casket burials since 2016, many people still have misconceptions and questions about the cremation process.
In partnership with the Cremation Association of North America, NMFH seeks to address those issues with the History of Cremation exhibit, which chronicles cremation from its beginnings in Pennsylvania in 1876 while demonstrating the step-by-step modern cremation process.
The exhibit highlights endless ways to memorialize the deceased—including through jewelry and paintings—and features a beautiful display of urns and burial objects, offering visitors newfound knowledge and respect for the process of cremation.

Founded in 1992 and boasting America’s largest collection of authentic historical funeral service items in 17 permanent exhibits, the National Museum of Funeral History (NMFH) is an exploration of history, science, and culture.
Visitors can learn about hearses through history, caskets and coffins, plus the funerals of U.S. Presidents and Catholic Popes, celebrities and the history of embalming and cremation while you witness the cultural heritage of the funeral service industry and its time-honored tradition of compassion.
