Houston is a great place to unwind. In this series, we’ll hop from neighborhood to neighborhood, diving into the fun and tasty ways to join in on the time-honored tradition of Sunday Funday, from brunch to live music and more.
Over near Fairview & Taft in the awesome neighborhood Montrose, the fun and funky Fairview District is home to many restaurants and bars, including a long-standing concentration of Houston’s LGBTQ+ bars.
From Sunday drag brunch and karaoke to bar hopping and hangover cures, here’s how to spend Sunday Funday in the Fairview District of Montrose.
Sunday Funday at Fairview District in Montrose
Hit up one of the best patio bars for drag brunch, Bangkok fries & more
Just off Taft and Fairview, Boheme doesn’t look like much from the outside. But enter and you’ll find one of the coolest wine bars around, complete with a cozy inside and sprawling, wrap-around patio that gets even nicer when you make it to the back.
The fun-loving spot hosts a rowdy Drag Brunch every Sunday, with shows from 11:30am to 1:30pm and 2:30pm to 4:30pm, plus you can stick around all day and night to enjoy wines, cocktails, and fan favorite eats from lavish pizzas to piles of shareable fries topped with things like smoked pork and curry mayo.
Cure your hangover with pozole & Mexico City bites
Right on Fairview sits a fantastic Mexico City–inspired bistro, Cuchara.
Visit the vibrant space at brunch and you can eat your way through the flavors of Mexico via chilaquiles and huevos divorciados, fall-apart lamb barbacoa and pork carnitas, and life-affirming pozole in both rojo and verde styles. You’ll want to wash it all down with a few cocteles, of course–Micheladas, Palomas, Bloody Marías, and more.
And for something sweet, pop into its sister bakery and cafe, Cucharita.
Go bar hopping through the gayborhood
Many of the city’s best gay bars sit in this tiny stretch of town, making it the perfect spot for an excellent Sunday Funday.
Visit and you can bar hop through a mix of energetic and laidback bars, including patio hotspot Barcode, day and nightlife favorite Buddy’s, lively hangout Crocker Bar, Eagle (where you’ll find Sunday spotlight performances), easy-going patio and darts bar George’s Country Sports Bar, iconic leather bar Ripcord, and late-night dance and nightclub South Beach.
Pair bruschetta boards and wine bottles
Sunday Funday can start with a wine-fueled hang at this totally approachable wine bar Postino.
Hit the patio to pair its signature bruschetta boards and “snacky things” like crispy cauliflower and meatballs & goat cheese with an easy-to-navigate selection of grapes by the glass and bottle.
There’s also brunch offerings, beer and—most importantly—happy hour ‘til 5pm (yes, even on Sundays).
Sing your heart out at Karaoke
Sunday Funday wouldn’t be the same without karaoke, which you can find on every Sunday night at JR’s Bar and Grill, a New Orleans-style patio and courtyard bar that many consider to rock the the greatest Sunday Funday in all of Houston.
Karaoke runs from 6pm to 2am, alongside a Super Sunday Drag Show at 11pm.
