In our seasonal My Top 5 series, we turn highlight Houstonians who are actively contributing to our city’s character and cultural menu. In turn, they confess their own favorite distractions and things to do when they’re not hard at work.

This week, we’re very excited to feature Ramon Soriano, owner of La Calle Tacos in Downtown and Midtown and La Diabla Retro-Bar in Historic Downtown Houston.

My Top 5 Things to Do in Houston

by Ramon Soriano

Going to Comedy Shows – I enjoy going to big ticket names at Toyota Center every once in a while, but I enjoy even more going to watch new up and coming talent on a weekday at the Houston Improv. I have seen some of the best stand up comedy that way.

“Collecting” Michelin Stars – I love doing culinary traveling with my daughter wherever I can, so I was so happy when Michelin came to Houston. I was lucky to have visited a couple of places like BCN and Le Jardinier before the star was awarded, so I think it counts. And we are in line, making our way around the rest of them.

Concerts! – The awesome trend of ’80s to ’90s bands touring over the last few years has been fantastic! I’ve had the chance to see all the concerts I missed out on in my 20s! Everything from Cindy Lauper, Madonna, and Depeche Mode at Toyota Center, OMD at Bayou Music Center, Caifanes at the House of Blues, and of course Front 242 at Numbers!

Crawfish – I’m lucky it’s only available for a few months of the year, as I would be a candidate for abuse! The rush you feel when you dial the phone to Sam’s BoatBB’s, or The Pit Room to see if they “have the stuff” at the beginning of the season is a lot of fun.

Sunday Movies – A nice and relaxed Sunday afternoon in the River Oaks District, starting with a nice brunch and a carajillo at Toulouse, followed by a movie at IPIC, is always a great way to finish the week for me.
