Gain a completely new perspective on the tombstones, truths and tall tales of the graveyard at a new interactive exhibit that’s eerily well-timed for Halloween.
Myths and Legends of the Graveyard at NMFH
You’ll gaze into a life-sized replica of a sarcophagus, learn to create a grave rubbing, decipher stone carvings, learn supernatural histories and debunk superstitions. You’ll hear both ghost stories and the real legends surrounding graveyards.
As you explore the tombstones in a misty graveyard, you’ll learn the meanings of grave markers ranging from the skull and crossbones, snakes and oak leafs to stars, angels and harps.
Play a game of Myth or Truth, learning the burial traditions of other cultures, such as the fact that the ashes of the dead in the Amazon are traditionally mixed with a banana paste and eaten by a relative (thus allowing the departed soul could move on).
The exhibit blends a lightly spooky Halloween experience with fascinating tales and ephemera from beside the grave, such as the cage-like mortsafes set above graves in the 19th Century to keep grave robbers out (or by some legends, to keep zombies in).
Halloween Season at the National Museum of Funeral History
Be sure to visit the National Museum of Funeral History throughout the season for fall activities that are fun for the whole family. Get spooked at the Haunted House through Monday, November 2, look at classic and contemporary cars (some cars will even be dressed up) during the annual Halloween Car Show with a fall festival atmosphere on Halloween Day, Saturday October 31, and learn about Latin customs during the Dia de los Muertos Celebration on Sunday, November 1.
