See the latest performing arts productions and theater happenings opening across Houston from Monday, January 8 to Sunday, January 14, 2024.

This week features a ROCO return to Saint Arnold, Ishida Dance’s first show of the year, and a super-sized, all-day performing arts festival at MATCH.

Top Performing Arts Openings This Week: January 8 to 14, 2024

  • ROCO presents Beer & Brass at St. Arnold Brewing Company | Tuesday, January 9 – The popular tradition returns as ROCO’s brass quintet offers up beer hall music and favorite brass arrangements. This new year’s kickoff is an evening of fun and fellowship for the whole family. Craft beers, root beer and bites included in the ticket price. $50 and up; $15 for children. 6:30pm.
  • Beethoven on the Bayou Festival at Archway Gallery | Wednesday, January 10 – La Speranza continues their three-concert festival of Beethoven works with an appearance at the Dunlavy art gallery in Montrose. This second of three concerts features Quartet No. 5 in A major and Quartet No. 6 in B flat major. $25. 7pm.
  • Ishida Dance presents keepsake at Hobby Center | Friday, January 12 & Saturday, January 13 – Catch an evening of dance with works choreographed by Ishida Dance, French choreographer Jeremy Galdeano, and Swedish dancer and choreographer John Wannehag, formerly with German ensemble tanzmainz. The company was recently named one of Dance magazine’s 25 Companies to Watch in 2023. $38 and up. 7:30pm.
  • Houston Symphony presents Mendelssohn’s Scottish Symphony at Jones Hall | Friday, January 12 to Sunday, January 14 – The composer traveled to Scotland as a young man, and the result is this joyful, invigorating composition that’s clearly a love letter to the country. A. Clyne’s Color Field and Bartók’s Violin Concerto No. 2 are also on the bill. $34 and up. Friday and Saturday 8pm; Sunday 2:30pm.
  • Mix-Match: A Mixed Arts Festival at MATCH | Saturday, January 13 – This first-ever festival runs for 12 hours, inviting the public to come by and see more than two dozen of Houston’s small and mid-sized arts organizations delivering captivating live performances, interactive activities, and more across the spectrum of performing arts. Festival passes are $25 and includes access to all performances, a mimosa kick-off with brunch bites, four complimentary drink tickets, and entry to the closing reception with a featured performance from Christina Wells. 10am to 10pm.
  • Mercury presents The Crimson Prince of Venice at Wortham Center | Saturday, January 13 – Through costumes and multimedia effects, you’ll find yourself immersed in what is part concert, part drama and part historical tale. Will Vivaldi or Paganini, two masters of the violin, come out on top? Find out in this evening of magic, which was a hit with Houston audiences when it premiered in 2015. $25 and up. 8pm.
  • Je’Caryous Johnson presents New Jack City at Hobby Center | Saturday, January 13 & Sunday, January 14 – With music from the classic film, this live theater production tells the story of Nino Brown, a Harlem drug lord who must decide between loyalty, money or total domination. $45 and up. Showtimes vary.
