Houston comes alive at night, with dives, cocktail bars, and nightclubs dotting the city. In our Houston Nightlife: The Best Bars, we cover the best night owl watering holes in each neighborhood.

Just southwest of Downtown, the Houston Museum District is a beautiful section of town that plays home to an organization of 20 museums, galleries, cultural centers, and community organizations. With so much culture and beauty, there’s no shortage of entertainment here, including several thirst-quenching watering holes that we’d like to highlight.

Bars are listed alphabetically and are not ranked.

For this list, the Museum District is defined as the area bordered by Richmond/Wheeler to the north, Montrose/Main to the west, Holcombe to the south, and 288 to the east.

Bar 5015

Located on Almeda, Bar 5015 is a hip bar and lounge with indoor and outdoor space, good music, and good vibes. We suggest looking out for specials like Thursday Steak Night, DJ and Reggae Jams, and monthly Spades Tournaments.

Betelgeuse Betelgeuse

Following in the footsteps of its original outpost on Washington Avenue, Betelgeuse Betelgeuse on Montrose Boulevard almost perfectly straddles the Museum District and Montrose neighborhood borders. Uber-casual and eclectic, the beloved cocktail bar and gourmet pizza joint from Chris Cusack serves up clever craft drinks that we simply cannot recommend enough. Filled with weird spacey- and sci-fi art, the bar’s named for the supergiant star Betelgeuse in the Orion constellation, and enjoys leaning into Houston’s Space City moniker and the occasional winky nod towards Tim Burton’s similarly-named films. Plus, if you love the guilty pleasures of uniquely tasty bar food, you’ll want to order up the Fried Spaghetti, Space Balls, and Brick Sticks.

Grand Prize Bar

One of Houston’s coolest dives is also its most prized. The unassuming Grand Prize Bar sits off Banks in the Museum District, features a low-key, laidback atmosphere that folks shouldn’t be fooled by. Known as a playground for talented mixologists, who know how to have fun and make some serious craft cocktails, Grand Prize is a place we recommend for anyone valuing quality libations without any pretense. You can shoot a game of pool, hit the jukebox, and of course, enjoy those tasty bevvies.

Monarch at Hotel ZaZa

Housed in the super-luxe Hotel ZaZa Museum District, Monarch restaurant and lounge rocks a gorgeous terrace overlooking the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. Hit the bar for bubbles, wines, craft beers, and boozy cocktails like the jalapeño-infused Mexican Paloma and apricot, ginger-honey, and peach kissed Whiskey Business.

The Tipsy Lounge

Nestled on the lively Almeda Road, The Tipsy Lounge mashes a dynamic atmosphere with electrifying beats and innovative drinks. Pop in for Freaky Fridays or Woman Crush Wednesdays; vibe to music from local and international DJs; and quench your thirst with cocktails like the LIT AF, hit with Tito’s, Bombay, Espolon Blanco, and Bacardi; or The Sober, a zero-proof mocktail featuring Topo, cucumber, mint, and lime.

Quad Houston Restaurant & Sports Lounge

Also off Almeda, Quad Houston redefines the game as an upscale sports lounge and social hotspot. The sleek establishment is the brainchild of Houston native and former NFL star Michael Brockers, bringing fresh energy to an area where culture, community, and cool collide since its doors opened in 2023. We recommend you go here to experience an extensive sports lineup, elevated Southern eats and boozy sips, indoor hookah and cigar patio, and fun weekly theme nights.
