In conjunction with Hispanic Heritage Month 2021, which occurs each year from September 15 through October 15, Comcast is honoring 8 Hispanic community volunteers who have demonstrated their commitment to Houston, its community organizations, and more. We’ve partnered with Comcast to highlight all 8 honorees and share a little bit about them, living in Houston, and giving back, all in their own words.
Now in its sixth year, Comcast’s Hispanic Hero Awards recognizes individuals who have served as forces for change in the community and also helps to celebrate Houston’s renowned diversity.
“We are inspired by the accomplishments and passion of each of these honorees and honored to be able to shine a light on all they do to make a difference to so many,” said Ralph Martinez, senior vice president for Comcast’s Houston region.
Today, we’re pleased to partner with Comcast to spotlight Lieutenant James Guzman.
Nominated by the Salvation Army of Greater Houston, Lieutenant James Guzman and his wife, Lieutenant Claudia Guzman, both serve as the Corps Officer/Pastor of the Salvation Army Conroe Community Center and the Wayne Bergstrom Center of Hope Shelter for men, women, and families.
A graduate of the Adult Rehabilitation Center with a sobriety date of Christmas Eve, December 24, 2021, Guzman struggled with drugs and alcohol for many years. Lieutenant James Guzman said, “If it weren’t for the Salvation Army introducing me to Jesus Christ, I would still be in and out of jail, continuing to use today.”
He obtained his Bachelor’s degree, and became commissioned and ordained, at the School for Officer Training at the Evangeline Booth College in Atlanta, Georgia.
He continues to remain active, engaging with his community’s youth, elderly, and homeless populations—providing food, sheltering, and social services while helping to meet the spiritual needs of those who turn to The Salvation Army.

We also asked Guzman to share some additional thoughts on his community involvement and life in Houston.
On his favorite way to give back in Houston…
“I like to spend time at local schools, sharing stories with the students to inspire them to dream big and achieve their goals. One of my favorite ways to give back is going out and helping other organizations with feeding and meeting those in the homeless population. I also volunteer coach a youth soccer team, teaching them discipline and how to work together as a team.”
On the habit that has contributed most to his success…
“I think for me, it’s my faith and my relationship with Jesus. I have been through some tough times and have had battles that I should have never made it through. But with Him and perseverance I have been able to accomplish things that I never imagined in my life.”
On his personal inspiration…
“I would have to say both my parents! They instilled in me, at a very young age, to always work hard towards my goals. Both worked very hard to give us a better life and to make sure that we had what we needed. They always encouraged us to strive to be better and to never forget our culture and traditions.”
On how he spends his free time…
“I really love spending time with my family! I have my wife, Claudia, and 2 beautiful kids—Santiago who is 5 and Sarai who is 19 months. I just love being able to spend time with them at the park, zoos, and museums.”
Finally, on his favorite Houston restaurant…
“That is a hard one!! My wife and I are foodies! We love Korean, ramen, and fusion food, but I think since we have been here, my wife and I have always consistently eaten at Angie’s Mexican Restaurant in Conroe. Great lunch specials, fast, hot, and delicious!”
