Sundance Film Festival 2021: A Conversation with Richard Linklater & Channing Godfrey Peoples

Thursday, January 28, 2021 | 4:00 pm

Free

Houston Cinema Arts Society (HCAS) and Sundance Institute are bringing the 2021 Sundance Film Festival to Houston, with screenings at Moonstruck Drive-In and the DeLuxe Theater.

Through the Sundance Satellite program, official selections of the festival and “beyond film” programs will play at Moonstruck Drive-In and DeLuxe Theater.

Films include I Was a Simple Man starring Constance Wu, Passing starring Tessa Thompson, Judas and the Black Messiah starring Daniel Kaluuya and LaKeith Stanfield, and Texas-set Miss Juneteenth.

A Conversation with Richard Linklater & Channing Godfrey Peoples

Before the Opening Night screening, tune in for a free virtual talk between two Texas filmmakers.

Richard Linklater often symbolizes independent filmmaking in Texas and regional auteurism, and his generation of filmmakers defined Sundance for years, even after big changes in festivals and the industry changed the “Sundance experience” for filmmakers. Texas-based filmmaker Channing Godfrey Peoples premiered her debut feature, Miss Juneteenth at Sundance in January 2020.

Both Linklater and Channing have early works focused on specific communities in Texas, aiming to represent them cinematically and authentically. The two filmmakers will sit down for a virtual conversation to explore the creative threads that connect them, and the journey of making independent films today.
