Joel Anderson’s Urban Observations Opening Reception at Archway Gallery
Saturday, January 4, 2020 | 5:00 pm to 8:00 pmFree
Archway Gallery in Montrose hosts a free opening reception for its newest exhibition, Urban Observations, featuring a new collection of encaustic painting by Joel Anderson.
See Houston through Anderson’s eyes—what he sees while driving about town and taking walks through the Houston Heights.
There are new perspectives on the Downtown skyline which has become a signature series for Anderson, as well as things that interest him in one way or another, including the tree canopies, cellphone towers, and the gargoyles that inhabit the Bayou City.
Encaustic painting, beeswax mixed with damar resin, was practiced by Greek artists as far back as the 5th century B.C.E.
A mid-20th century revival, including works by Diego Rivera and Jasper Johns, brought encaustic painting back into prominence. Anderson’s creative process incorporates modern digital methods into the ancient medium.
Anderson maintains a studio at The Silos on Sawyer and is a frequent exhibitor on the local art fair circuit, including the Bayou City Arts Festival and the First Saturday Arts Market.
There will be artist remarks at 6:30pm. Complimentary wine and light bites will be served. Complimentary valet service will be provided.
The exhibition will be on display from Saturday, January 4 through Thursday, January 30, 2020.
