Jazz on Film: A Tuba to Cuba Movie Screening at MFAH
Saturday, June 8, 2019 | 7:00 pm
The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston’s Jazz on Film returns to celebrate jazz and its intersections with cinema from Saturday, June 7 through Sunday, June 23, 2019.
Organized by guest curator Peter Lucas, this year’s program salutes 1959—a pivotal year in jazz and film—with 60th-anniversary presentations of the Duke Ellington–scored Anatomy of a Murder, the Sun Ra–scored independent rarity Cry of Jazz, and concert documentary favorite Jazz on a Summer’s Day. Another highlight is the Houston premiere of new documentary A Tuba to Cuba, following the famed Preservation Hall Jazz Band from New Orleans on an inspiring trip across the island.
A Tuba to Cuba
In search of musical connection, members of the famed Preservation Hall Jazz Band from New Orleans embark on an inspiring, two-week journey through post-embargo Cuba in 2015.
Band director and tuba-playing member Ben Jaffe, whose parents founded Preservation Hall in the early 1960s, guides the group’s cross-cultural conversations and spontaneous musical collaborations in streets, homes, and venues across the island.
A Tuba to Cuba follows the musicians from Havana, to Santiago de Cuba, to Cienfuegos as they find solidarity with Cubans through shared histories of hardship and resilience—and joyous musical expressions.
